Oil pan gasket replacement - motor mounts too?

87 944 NA

The oil pan gasket replacement procedure on Clark's Garage seems to me to suggest that it is a preferable time and way for replacing motor mounts than the standard procedure.

Is this a good idea?

If you are dropping the cross-member then it is definitely a good time to replace them. The cross-member has to be dropped if working from below. The engine being hoisted from above to get at the pan will still expose the engine mounts. Either way, a good time to replace.

While you have the pan off, it's recommended that you replace the rod bearings and bolts and inspect the oil pickup tube for cracks. It's not expensive and another WYIT (while you're in there) item to do.

Good luck on the pan gasket. My biggest recommendation for success in resealing it is to wipe the mold release off the gasket with laquer thinner or acetone, and wipe the metal surfaces down real good as well. Put a thin coat of whatever sealant you choose in the corners and let it tack up before installing the pan. This will ensure that the gasket doesn't bulge or "walk" after it's installed.

3 944's, 2 Boxsters and one Caman S, and now one 951 turbo. Really miss the Cayman.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
