Fuel, Idle, Death

Hi All,

I am trying to get my car on the road, but am not able to get it on the road. It ran for about 8 miles perfectly fine, but then would not exceed 4k rpm. The car then refused to idle. I drained the whole gas tank, cleaned the screen in the gas tank, replaced the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and pulled and cleaned the injectors. I started it up tonight the car will fire immediately, but not hold an idle. If I give it the slightest throttle I can coax the car along till it will idle for a few minutes. If, however, I try to apply the throttle the car will immediately die. One thought is the fuel regulator might have gotten clogged or just has failed. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you guys for allowing me to tap into your vast knowledge.

Shawn

Fuel pressure regulator sounds suspect to me. Would not exceed 4k RPM.... are you sure it's not a spark issue either like plugs, coil, etc

Have you checked the connectors of the tps and afm for corrosion and security? If one of the connectors isn't making good, solid connection, if could cause engine problems that come and go due to engine vibration. Also look for a vacuum line that may be coming apart of just old and cracked. This causes a myriad of issues with fuel regulators, AFM's and other stuff. Vacuum checks are easy and cheap and I'll be happy to show you if interested.

Good luck with this.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I suggest testing fuel pressure first then look at plugs and go from there.

I'd check the plugs right away, fuel pressure will not tell you if you have one leaking injector or one stuck one or something like that. They might tell you if you are destroying your engine running lean or just carbon fouling the rings and valves. You can also foul plugs so that when you do find the problem and fix it, the now-fouled plugs just confuse the issue.

The fuel pressure should be checked, and the damper could also be bad, blown and leaking fuel.

Thanks guys

I will pull the plugs and see if I am running lean. I will also replace the fuel regulator with a known good one. Checked vacuum lines tonight, everything looked good. I will clean the connections to the TPS and AFM. I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Thanks again.

2 bits

not likely but check air flow and exhaust flow restrictions. Double check vac lines. FPR, coil, There is a dual relay that powers the fuel pump and they can go flaky. check voltage at coil and Fuel pump, Which, I am hoping is good.

+1 on checking fuel pressure and plugs just to know.

Lol might as well do a leak down and compression test while you have the plugs out.
