EPA compliance sticker

I have this sticker inside my door jamb and I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it means that the car is ok with California smog emissions standards as well.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

All of the USA 944 cars were 50 state cars, so California emissions should not be a problem.

Then what is the "California Car" option?

Almost. The oxygen sensor for his 87 (and other late 8v NA's) would be 944 606 135 02 if equipped for federal emissions or 944 606 135 00 if equipped for California emissions.

Interestingly the part number for the California equipped early 944's is 944 606 135 00, the same as the late California. Obviously the early federal cars have the single wire non-heated 944 606 133 00.

Yes! I am very lucky to have not yet failed. California cars have the three-wire heated O2 sensor, this I know. If you haven't already, I upgraded to a new Bosch 'universal' three-wire heated oxygen sensor for like $30 off eBay, works great and I indeed pass smog! (assuming my cat converter is installed )

my new O2 sensor has 3 wires plug ('87 944 N/A) but don't think it's a California compatible sensor. Not sure what the part number is but it was proper replacment for this car. So basically having 3 wires doesn't make it a Caliornia compatible or "heated" sensor, right?

Yeah as long as you drove around for 10-15 minutes, got the RPM's nice and high, and have a working O2 sensor and catalytic converter I think you'll be fine..

I haven't decided to move back to California yet, as much as I'd like to, but if I do, I'm definitely taking my 944. So the emissions issue was a concern.

Today, I took her out or a real test ride after replacing the TPS with a new Bosch unit (staggering acceleration) and new NGK plugs w/indexing shims. When I laid the loud pedal to the floor, it really takes off. Now I'm really enjoying my baby. Don't know if the indexing of the plugs is effecting a noticeable difference, but I've read some really great info from old school motorcycle and car racers about improved fuel economy and minor hp increases.
