I've been there, done that with the shifter trying to tighten it up. Finally bought an aftermarket "short shift" with a rod post verses the flat bar shifter...had to get a new knob. On a related item, I also bought a new "short shift kit" that mounts on the tranny end of the shift rod. There were no instructions except for the seller saying "it just bolts in". Have any of you guys installed one of these before? Looks like the exhaust needs to be moved minimum just to get to the bolts (I'm hoping not the torque tube). Is it worth it? The new shifter helped reduce the play and vibration alot but it's not completely gone and I like the idea of a quicker shift throw.
