Repairing a Leaky 944 Oil Pump?

Hello - I'm going to look at a 1983 944 tomorrow that is intended for occasional track use.

The engine is said to have been replaced in the last 10 years, and the only real issue with the car is a leaky oil pump (seal?).

I see that you can get a new seals kit for under $100 for the front of the engine.

Is this a terrible & expensive problem to rectify? Should it scare me away from this car - which otherwise seems excellent.

Thanks! Dickson

Typical but time consuming repair. Budget about $500 and 15 hours to take care of everything while it's apart. (Belts, water pump, front seals, drive sleeve)

You need a flywheel lock to remove the front crank bolt ~$50
You will also/usually/most likely have to replace the oil pump sleeve ~$40

Make sure you get good oil pressure.

If i'm correct, you will have to drop the oil pan also, so you will have to replace that gasket as well- $40- then at that point I would redo the bearings as well. It might not have to be done, but why drop the bottom off and not do everything you can while you are there. Especially if you will be run ning it hard on a track. I have 2 track cars and I would do it all while I have it apart. Just my 2 pennies.
