Long story short- '87 n/a, cracked cylinder, so I replaced the engine. The clutch on the original engine only had .3mm of wear so I took it off and put it right on the new engine. It was the type of clutch with the rubber center, but still good. I used the alignment tool and everything. Started the car, ran great...here's the issue- as the car runs in gear, randomly, the clutch seems to catch and start grinding. I quickly put it into neutral and it stops. When I put it back into gear it runs fine again then suddenly catches and sounds like it is grinding again. The clutch does have to be bled, but it has enough movement at the clutch fork to move through all of the gears. HELP!!!!

Did you change your TO bearing?

Thanks for your reply- I did'nt replace the TO bearing. It looked good, and it doesn't sound like bearing noise. It seems as though it is coming from the plate itself.

Put you finger in the inspection hole and see if there's rubber dust or pieces of rubber in there. It could be that the disc looked ok but maybe being old, it just let go. That grinding could be the "get home tab" on the disc. Good luck.

Another test: park on a flat, level surface, place the car in 1st gear and leave the parking brake off. Hop out and get behind the car and rock it forward and back. If your clutch is on its limp tabs you'll hear them click each time they engage when the car changes direction.
