boge front strut inserts
I've change the inserts on my 85.5, which was easy, they have a screw on nut that holds the insert into the strut. I was just looking at my 87 and it's different. It looks like it has a cap that's crimped on. I haven't been able to find any info on this. How are these inserts removed?
PP sells KYB inserts for Boge struts, but how do they get installed? KYB front inserts from PP

Conventional wisdom has it they can't be changed. Gotta swap the entire assy.

But PP and other places just sell the insert, so they must be changeable. In my link the picture is small but it has the same type of cap/nut and my strut has. I just need to know if they are twist off or something else? And why can't I find any info on this, like a how to or something. crazy.

Un-crimp them? Somebody somewhere must have experimented. But AFAIK only the early cars had changeable inserts. That said, maybe you'll be the first to post a how-to.

Sorry Kyle, after 1986 Porsche moved to a sealed strut design. You need to replace the unit pretty much. I guess there could be some hacksaw way, but I doubt it's worth that effort

Thanks Slam, I remember that old post. That was right before I changed the strut inserts on my 85.5. I ended up using the cheapest inserts I could. It's almost been 2 years since then and they are still perfect, I love them. Grant it I don't do anything crazy, just daily driving, but they are still great.
The KYB inserts that PP sells doesn't say anything about having to modify the strut to install them, that's what's confusing me. They make it seem like they are a direct replacement. As long as it comes with directions, I should be good. Oops, I looked at the inserts again and they are listed for up to 86. That's why they don't have the nut on the bottom of the insert.

It's not that hard or expensive to fit the Koni insets using the cut-off method, just takes time to modify the housing.

Don't shoot the piano player, Greenwater. They're only struts and the '87' s a fine car. Everything can be overcome with tools and beer

I still love my 87, just frustrated, I'm trying to change a power steering hose and it was kicking my ass a little. I had to remove the rack from the car and I'm having a little trouble getting it back in. Hopefully I can finish it today.
Does anyone know if I can get the struts from an earlier car, like 85. Will they fit on my 87? The 87 has a different wheel offset, but I don't know if the struts are the same. I wouldn't mind doing the hacksaw job but the koni are just too much money.

Struts from an early car will not fit, its not the offset that makes a difference, its the mounting to the spindle that is different. Any turbo (86+) or any Na (87+) will fit but they are all sealed type struts. Koni inserts are about $200 each.

Well, that sucks. I guess I will have to live with the inserts that are in there for a while longer.

9FF, the 1986 951 should also be the same offset as 1986 NA, my NA has 951 wheels from the same year I believe....
