Squealies
1987 Porsche 944S.
Okay so i got a hold of some manifold gauges and some r-12. so i figured what the hell i might as well check on the system. pressures were a little low so i hooked up the r-12 to the low side and starting re-charging. after about a minute the air intake filter fell off and the engine shut off(just got this car about a week ago and im still correcting problems). i shut down the recharge and put everything off to the side while i put the intake back on and started the car. immediately i heard the squealing of belts so i shut the car off. i took a look under the hood and there was smoke coming up from the A/C compressor pulley. also the belt was pretty warm to touch. i turned off the AC and started the car back up, everything was fine. turned on the AC and the squealing happened again. turned it off everything was fine. basically my question is, does this sound like a seized compressor and can i drive the car with it in this condition or should i change the belt and compressor before driving it. |

Hate to ask, but is it smoke, or is it refrigerant from a (now) overcharged AC system?

yea i kno the hose clamp was not actually on....so the whole assembly fell off. and its definitely smoke from either the belt or the clutch. smells like burning rubber

There should be a bracket and bolts holding the whole airbox/assembly to the car.. not by a hose!

Sounds like a cone filter fell off. My guess is the compressor locked trying to compress liquid R12 from overfill.

Yes it was a cone filter. And according to my gauge manifold the pressure is still at zero. pretty sure its empty. anyway im more worried about the belt than the compressor cause the belt got a little warm. i was planning on driving the car from new york to virginia on sunday. but im thinkin mayb i should hold off on road trips until i change that belt. any thoughts

Sounds like the compressor is locked up. I'd change that first.

sounds like the gauge that tells you the pressure wasn't fully engaged and it read zero while you were actually overfilling the system. To be safe, take it to an AC place to get it right. The burning smell and smoke is fromt the belt trying to drive a seized up compressor.
