dumb transmission oil change question
if the transmission is already out, is it better to install it back, drive it around, and only after that is done, change the oil?
i.e. is it a Bad Idea to rotate it by hand to "warm" it up? how "warm" does it get anyways?

It really doesn't matter. Just make sure you can get the drain and fill plugs out. The fill plug is most important since you can't service the tranny (in the car) if you can't get fluid in. I serviced mine while it was out of the car and used Redline MT-90 fluid. With the new short shifter from only944.com it feels like a new transaxle.

Warming up or "Mixing" the sludge and metal particles in transmission fluid is preferred to a cold drain were the gunk inside has settled.
Now the guys on the "RED-GREEN" PBS show would probably do something brilliant and connect an AC motor to the transaxle drive shaft and plug it in. J_AZ
