Smile The secret is out

Just got an email blog entry from a UK-based insurance comparison website, it seems our little secret is out...

Now everyone will want one!

I know this is not exactly a technical post, but though some of you guys might be interested...

Nice!

quote "You might have to give it plenty of TLC but the fact is you can recapture some 80s style with a 944 on a 2,000 budget. "

It is also a fact that most 944 cars found ("The six coolest cars under 2,000" or USD $3145), need another 3 to 6 thousand in TLC (parts/labor) to get them road worthy.

Well said, John. Top Gear did an episode on the 944's and drove them to death. Anyway, even if you have to invest what you paid for the car to get it right, it still out handles a 911

You are probably more than right, there lots of other cars in that price bracket that are better...but, are they cooler??

I get the feeling that a lot of 'un-informed' people buy a 'cheap' 944 thinking it will remain cheap to run....I guess the other secret is that we know that is simply not the case - the blog writers statement about 'plenty of TLC' is a bit of a nave understatement!

I seem to recall that Top Gear did one episode where they bought Porsches for 1000. Clarkson bought a 928, May bought a 944 and Hammond a 924. They then put them through a series of punishing 'challenges' - they all got trashed ...good television though!

Clarkson also did an episode where he fitted a home-made rocket launcher to a 951. That was funny.....stupid, but funny.

Another time they took three cars across to Scandinavia to play in the ice and snow...Clarkson took a nice S2, that too got beaten up.

Most of this stuff is on Youtube..have a search..just remember that Clarkson is both an idiot and not too fond of Porsches!

I do enjoy the semi-exclusive environment, particularly here is MA. I know there's a few of us but I only encounter one every few months. That's good enough for me.

I loved this episode! But when I saw him destroying it on the ice I got pretty irritated.

LOL if that article isn't a trap idk what is! My 944 was $3,300 and now more than $10,000 into it easily, and it's still not up to my par lol

Howdy..
Respectfully, could ya please reveal your sub $3,145 cars "better than a 944"..
( not being snarky, just trying to expand my world)
Perhaps simpler Honda/Toyota mid90's cars are "better" for maint/repairs?

If forced, I'd argue that since unloved 1997-1998 BMW 740/750's (post-nikasil) can be had for less than $3k USD nowadays, your posit is supportable.
While most 25-yo 944 seems to maintain better residuals (current value vs. original MSRP) than most 15-yo 7-series, the speed, safety, comfort/capacity of the Bimmer wins out?

Surely, for handling/racing the Porsche wins out, ya..

Looking fwd to your example(s).
Cheers.. mikey

Yep, me too...I flinched every time he hit the ice bank, or one of the other cars! Once you know how much work goes into keeping a good 944 clean and tidy, you really don't want some overgrown schoolboy deliberately smashing one up

Like I said - Clarkson is an idiot.

Gaw,
Exactly correct!! $3,900.00 purchase cost and $10,086.00 to date.
What's interesting is that I spent zero during the entire 106k mile range!
I do have 163 entries in the maintenance log book (ouch).

P.S. Clarkson is funny even though it's painful watching the 911 get destroyed
