Have a 84 944NA and I want to replace my original Bosch coil with an aftermarket unit. Car is having some spark issues and want to replace the coil. Looking for suggestions. I like MSD units but not married to that brand. What have you other guys used? Specific model numbers would be helpful since MSD makes several different Blaster2 units for example. Thanks for the advice and I look forward to getting on the road soon.

Just go with a stock Bosch, no need for anything else.

I do appreciate the input. An issue that I have is that a new Bosch unit is $90 and a MSD unit is $45. I usually don't go for paying 2X for a comparable unit, so I am looking for viable options.

The stock coil leaves a bit to be desired....
I did a page about our ignition system a while ago: Rogue Tuning - 944/951 Ignition System Testing

The Bosch is $64 on amazon with free two day shipping. Josh wrote all about coils, but it might as well have been written in Chinese, I didnt understand any of it, hahahah.

I used and liked the Jacob's Energy coil in one of my 944's with a great success. It gave good spark and lasted as long as I had the car. Those coils are no longer available though, and that company was bought out by Accell.

If you really want to upgrade and really notice a BIG difference, rip the distributor out, fit a crank sensor and run Electromotive DFU's. |

Blue 7:
Recommend the MSD SS Coil, MSD Blaster 2 or Nology M70/M75 Nology is the ultimate with 55k Volts. Most power for $$ MSD at 44K gives 33% more than OEM Bosch unit at 31K. My combo is MSD6BTM and M75 with NGK 7 Iridium plugs...best spark I have ever seen on street car...

I'm partial to Denso Platinum TT spark plugs in the 944 and 928 series. The Jacobs Energy coils I used were 45,000 Volts and worked fine in both my 944 and 928. There was a small increase in performance. There is no doubt about that.
