transmission cover (?) removal/install
I am wondering about removal of the piece on the manual transmission that appears to be a cover (see pic). It is held in by some hex bit screws. I looked through Volume 3 of the SM to get an idea for how this is removed/installed, but did not get a clear idea about it.
Are the screws only holding the cover piece, or does this begin to disassemble the larger piece of the transmission they are screwed into? I am really only interested in taking the cover off to sand/clean/paint it - nothing technical with the tranny apart from torquing the screws.

From what I recall, there are two screws that hold the cover in place, they go right through and hold the end casing in place too. But as there are about 8 or so holding the end casing on, it is OK to remove these. Simply slide the cover off, clean up, repaint and refit. Remember to torque the bolts up...job done!

right, so I don't know the terms for that part -
I am reading the SM Volume 3, page 30-5, there's one of those lists, and we have: "End shield to transmission case" hexagon head screw M8 grade 8.8 24 Nm (17 fp)... though page 34-16 shows 7X parts no. 4 "bolt 8 X 45" and counterpart washers no. 5 with torque 25 Nm (18 fp), in section "rear cover"... no. 34 is the penultimate section called "gear carrier". the disk at the very end is the "end cover". looks like the last two sections (rear cover + gear carrier) together are called the "gear carrier assembly" (no. 12 p. 34-11). the end-most section is also called here a "rear cover" can't find that thin little cover piece though, and obviously I'm very confused with all these covers. BTW, part no. 16 on p. 34-10 is a "cover", and remark is "position correctly - magnet faces down" - that sounds cool, is that cover magnetic to grab particles?
