Early 944 water pump, timing belt replacement

I'm sure this topic has been covered many times here on the board.

I need to replace the water pump and both timing and balance shaft belts on my 84 944.

Is there a good tech article on this? Do you use the later pump as well on the early car? Thanx all L

Yes, there are many articles on this. Try clarks-garage, which is where a lot of such articles reside.

If this is your car, or has been in decent upkeep since 1984, then you'll probably know that most older water pumps have been replaced somewhere along the line.

I recently bought an 84 that looked in decent shape, and when I went to do the belts I found that the water pump was the newer model.

It had a white plastic plug on the pump, and also a timing belt guide rail installed that the original pump setup didn't have - those two items will let you know at a glance if you have a newer one in place already or not.

If you still have an older model pump then it's a good idea to replace it with a newer model one.

The main difference is that if you still have the older model pump in place, you'll need to get the update kit (white plastic plug, belt rails etc) as well as the newer model pump and gasket. If you have the later model pump then it'll just be the pump itself and the gasket.

Take care to inspect the gasket very well. Mine was slightly creased on receipt, and I didn't notice until the slow leak started after installation. And yes, I used sealant too.

The Clark's Garage write up is what I used and the job went very smooth. You really don't need any other write up. Of this is your 1st time doing it leave yourself a whole weekend.

I used a torque wrench for the water pump bolts and no sealant... not one drop has ever leaked.

This guy made a nice video on the water pump, rollers and seals. He speaks German but the subtitles are in English.

The water pump on my 84 looks to still be the original early version. There is a metal snout on top of the pump with a short curved rubber hose attached and I don't see the metal tb guide rail unless you have to remove the pump and dissassemble the pump to get to it.

Would it be ok to get an early pump? Zims in Texas has a rebuilt early one for $95

I'd replace with the updated version, just a suggestion.
