fuel pump cover

'87 944 na

what is this thing on the fuel pump cover (see pic)?

can I leave it there when taking the cover off - i.e. if I just pull the cover off and leave it alone, will it damage something in there?

This is the plastic clip that holds the wiring to the fuel pump. Remove the two screws that secure the cover and pull the whole mess loose. You will see where the wiring is clipped to the inside of the cover. Strange that you ask this one. I just replaced my fuel pump Saturday evening.

speaking of a fuel pump cover, does anyone have any ideas how to fab one(stuff from lowes or home depot etc)? Ordering one is out of the question. $200 seems a little much. Is the cover made of ground up unicorn horn? is there something about the part itself that that makes it worth $200 that I just don't know about(other than just plastic covering and protecting the pump from rocks of course)?

Here' a good used one. Cheaper than the aphrodisiac Unicorn horn.

I suppose I ought to chime in - this was exactly what happened. the pump wires didn't get tugged too much - there's plenty of slack. thanks wrench1.
