'84 944/1 aftermarket steering wheel wiring issues.

Hi everyone,

So the other day some big ol sub almost ran me off the road, I wanted to honk my horn by I never had it wired. So instead I slammed it and darted past him (thank God for the speed).

Anyways my question to anyone is that my after market steering wheel didn't come with any instructions to hook up the horn. The problem with that I do know of is that the original steering wheel had ground through it and the one wire that connects to the horn just acts as the grounder. I have soldered the wire onto it and I have that but other than that I have no idea what else I should do. How does the positive even get to the horn?

from my understanding the positive will be hot at the horn and when you ground the ground it completes the circut but I could be wrong about this.

Do you know how to ground the wire to the car in the OEM steering wheel? My best guess was going to be the steering column but I dont want to just start randomly grounding wires to spots.

iirc there is no positive wire just two ground wires, wire both to the horn button. The one in the picture to one terminal of the horn button and make up another ground from the other terminal to one of the bolts holding the steering wheel in place. Operating the horn button completes the ground-side of the horn circuit.

Okay, so I made another wire that connects to the other terminal and its soldered onto the top of the screw. Yet I'm still not getting a beep. What i noticed is when the entire wheel is off and its nothing but the silver metal piece with the VW and Audi logo on it, if I touch the copper tab and that silver piece together, the horn will beep. So I know thats where the ground is. Yet I hook everything up and the new wire I made wont touch anywhere to that silver piece...

What brand of steering wheel is that? Do you have a horn retaining ring like the one in this link?

Momo Horn Button Retainer Ring | eBay

The little gold wire on the side of your horn button usually makes contact with the horn retaining ring shown in the link and completes the circuit when you hit the horn button. That is why there is only one wire coming out of your steering wheel hub.

If you don't have the retaining ring, you need a jumper wire to go from the 2nd tab on the back of the horn button to one of your bolts for the hub.

The actual ground for your steering column should be at the bottom of the column, under the car...IIRC it connects to the cross member? It's been a while so the location may be a little off, but I had a similar issue about 15 years ago, and the ground wire was the culprit.

Hope that makes sense.
