Switched 12 Volts

Where can I find a switched 12 volts under the dash of my car? Preferably somewhere around the radio or above the glove box since I already have them removed. I'm installing an amplifier for my subwoofer and I don't want to run a wire all the way from the coil to the interior of my car. Please don't tell me to poke around with my meter. I lost it and I don't feel like buying a new one....

Thanks,
Jeff

By saying switched, do you mean on/off with the ignition? What are the power requirements of the amp? I know it's 12V. Every power amp install I've seen or removed takes its power directly from the battery and used a fairly heavy gauge wire. Kinda the nature of the beast. If you have a professional car stereo install business in your area ask them how, and why, they do the install the way they do.

Look up the wiring diagram and use a meter.

Generally, there is a trigger wire that would come off the radio, and you would use this as the on/off switch for the amp. This will be a light guage wire. Then, you would run a fused wire from the battery directly to the amp, as most amps require a lot of power. The wire size will depend on the amp, but is generally 6 guage, from the battery to the amp, but a larger wire may be required.

Yes, on/off with the key. I'll see if there's any car stereo shops in my area and see what they recommend.

The manual recommend 8 gauge, but the lowest I could find is 10. Would that still work?

Pelican can loan you an internet air adapter. Occasionally some of their threads get a little too much air in them and need to be bled off anyway.

If you cannot afford a $3 tool you need to sell your aging German sports car immediately.

I know it's around somewhere so if i stumble upon it I'll use it. As soon as I buy something to replace an item i lost the original always shows up so I would end up with an extra meeter I have no use for.

No thanks. I like this car.

I'll think about it if I don't find my meter soon.

I am adding an amplifier/subwoofer because even with my fancy new speakers music still sound like ****. There's no bass to the music. If I turn up the bass on the radio my speakers begin to distort and sound like ass. I'm not trying to have the bass turned up to the point that my car rates apart like you see other kids these days do. I just want my music to sound better. Hate all you want, but I'm still going to install it.

Some guys can be funny just harmless fun, a cheap test light from Walmart will work just fine. Also if your amp calls for a certain gauge wire then that's what you should use.

Just ******* with you chunk. I found along time ago that when doing electrical work you need a meter. I wired my V1 to one of the red wires on the back of the stereo, but again, used a meter to find switched power.

Ok guys, Just a simple question... I need to start my car but don't tell me to get a key because the dog ate it and I refuse to follow it around all day.

Andrew,

What type of meter did you have? Was it a Simpson 260? If so, PM me please.

Patrick

Chunkerz, I'm interested in what you have done or doing to your sound system. What kind of subwoofer and placement. I am a member of Audiokarma.org, you can become a member or a subscriber to the site. There is a section for car systems. The people on the site are very helpful and a lot of information is available. I have been working over a year to build my vintage home stereo system and am myself thinking of re-working the system in the 944. I'd like to see some pictures. Fritz

So far I have installed 4x6 Infinity Kappa plate speakers in the front doors and Kicker 6x9 3 way coaxial speakers in the rear. I am using the KLA hidden subwoofer that fits down inside passenger side cubby area. The driver is only 8 inches and will most likely be a little muffled by the carpet, but oh well. I'm not trying to rattle my car to bits. The amplifier is a Kicker DX 250.1.

Good news! I found my meter! I'm glad I didn't waste money on another one. If it doesn't rain today I'll poke around and see what I can find. Is there a bus anywhere that I could get power from? My VW had a bus with switched 12 volts that I used to get power from for the subwoofer I had in that car.

Does anyone have any recommendations for amplifier placement? Under the seat isn't an option since there's no room. I don't want to put it under the trunk carpet because it will most likely overheat. I don't want to put it in the spare tirewell because I like having a spare tire. I was thinking about strapping it to the underside of the glove box for easy access. The only thing that worries me about this is it overheating in the winter when I like to warm up my feet. Perhaps I could mount it in the drivers side cubby hole with the sunroof motor?
