Mystery Parts: 16v S Engine..

The engine has been completely apart and separated into boxes in my garage for a couple of years.. I wanted to make sure I have all the parts, so I pieced together everything I could and loosely screwed it together. I used cardboard as gaskets and the old bearings..



There are still a few pieces and I'm not sure where to put them. Can anyone identify these parts?

1) looks like the Airflow Meter Bracket
8 and 9) vacuum lines and joints, prob go under the manifold.
6) speed sensor with bracket?

Do you have better picture and different angles of the others? I just picked apart a 16V myself and rebuilt my own.

6 is the speed sensor bracket, mounts to the rear of the engine once the bellhousing has been installed.

3 is a bracket which mounts under the intake manifold and is used to keep the wiring harness away from direct contact with the block

5 looks like you have 2 of those as there is one already installed at the front of your motor. This is the coolant bleed neck, and the one mounted at the rear of the engine is totally different.

2 is a heatshield which mounts to your oil filter console and protects it from the radiant heat of the headers

1 is your AFM bracket. One side attaches to mounting points on the strut tower, the other to the bottom of the AFM

7 I can't quite make out, can you snap a pic from a different angle?

Actually, 7 is the water neck for the rear of the motor. The speed sensor plug on the DME-side wiring harness attaches at that rectangular cut-out at the top right of the black bracket attached to the water neck in your picture.

One other thing about Item 6. The longer sensor is the speed sensor, and needs to be plugged into the wiring harness. The shorter sensor is a TDC sensor which is only used for diagnostics, and actually I've never seen it used for diagnostics. It doesn't get plugged into your wiring harness and you can actually remove it if you want.

I don't recognize item 4 off the top of my head, but I have an S motor on an engine stand in my garage, I will take a look when I get home later. I definitely don't have that bracket currently installed but if it came off of an S motor I have that in a bin next to the engine.

I think #4 is an crankcase heat shield:

Thanks for the help, everyone. Here is another image.. I'm starting to think #5 is a repeat, I did have 2 engines at one point.



About #7, I'm not sure the bracket is attached in its original position.. also, does it need a spacer underneath?

No, I dont think rhat bracket attaches there on number 7. I think that bracket actually bolts to the back of the block or maybe the bellhousing. I couldn't find that bracket in my stuff. The rear water neck does not have a spacer.

EDIT: This post is incorrect, based on rhett's photo, that bracket does in fact attach to the water neck.

Yep, I think you are spot on there. It attaches just above the sump/block gasket near the exhaust side engine mount and it covers the sump oil level sender connection. I didn't recognise it at first because mine had been broken off...
