944 engine removal question
How many hours to take the engine out of my 84 944?
Do I have to remove the transmission and torque tube/drive shaft as well? Thanx L |

944 Engine Removal
Expect most of a day for an inexperienced person. The more your do it, the faster you'll get, so experienced techs should be able to cut it down to just a few hours.

I tired pulling one out the top on a car I parted, big PIA, I think dropping it from the bottom might be easier... But in either case, you should drop the cross member. If pulling from the top, the pan will hit/be stuck on the cross member and the front of the engine (ps pump etc will hit the frame.
What are you doing to your car? If you for some reason also need to drop transmission that would make things a lot easier, and you could then drop the torque tube too at the same time... I ended up spending a few days on it trying to figure out exactly how to do it and I did it alone... ![]()

But I'd still recommend dropping the cross member, I kept getting the oil sump stock/banging on it... that's from a novice "just learning" "mechanic"

Top is easy, cross member drop wasn't needed, didn't even remove the hood. Only thing that caught up was the bursch header. It's fairly easy to do.

Remove crank sensors, unbolt bell housing, get the rad out, disconnect everything and haul away. Leave the header on, remove the air box 'cause there's a lift ring under it. In broad strokes... Getting it out from underneath you dont have to touch the transmission but you do have to jack the car up so that the front valance lip is at least 25.5 inches above ground level and you do have to remove the radiator, steering rack, anti-roll bar, disconnect inner ends of front A arms, remove the front half of the exhaust although it might be easier to remove the whole exhaust. If I were doing it again I would not remove the front cross member from the engine mounts but would lower it still connected. That's how I re-installed the engine. Suggest you acquire a 3/8 drive 17mm flex socket to undo one of the torque tube-bellhousing bolts-it will save you a lot of grief-remove clutch slave cylinder first though

My car is ROW with the neater front bumper so didnt need to remove it as there was almost exactly enough room lengthwise to get the engine crane in. The issue for me was the height under the opened garage door for the crane. Did it all with only millimetres to spare.
