tranny parts: articulated arm on shift link (?)

want to know how to remove the - I think - articulated arm. this is attached at the transmission case at one end and the shift linkage at the other - see pic.

Clark's has a writeup on this, but I am still wondering. I looked at the SM, but did not see the torque values. I want to merely detach one point - either at the shift linkage, or the one on the transmission case - to get it out of the way. it is interfering with a drill I want to use for another whole mess. (alternatively, a drill bit extension would be helpful, but that's another story... unless you wish to diver the thread - fine with me!)

also I need to know if it is trivial to detach and reattach, or if the linkage will need readjustment, if oil will spray out somewhere, or some other nightmare will be unleashed...

I think the torque values you are looking for are in the table, at the bottom of page 30-09. I removed this by undoing the fixing on the transmission case. No nightmares, no oil, etc. Simple to move out of the way. The rod is a fixed length with rubber mounts, so there is no adjustment, simply bolt it back on.

thanks, now I see - so I take it that the "joint rod" is what I called the "articulated arm", namely, the straight solid piece between the "shift lever" (their wording) and the transmission case? so that's a ball-ended bolt on the rod-case attachment?

Thumbs up

Yep, that's the joint rod (see diagram), you can also see the ball-ended bolts:

Hope that helps..

well, I asked if anything would spray out as hyperbole - and guess what, as I was "breaking" it loose, "SPSSHHHTT", and bubbly foam comes out. didn't smell though, handled like water - I think some moisture / pressure must have gotten trapped in there after all these years, finally saw the light of day. but now because that arm is out of the way I can work on the other nightmare - errr, problem.

I mentioned that I too undid this rod at the transmission and moved it out the way and there is no adjustment. Since found out that at the other end the gear rod bracket has a slot machined in it, not a round hole. This does allow a degree of adjustment for the gear lever side to side location. Never having undone that bolt I was unaware.. I think it is pretty straightforward to setup if it gets moved.

However, if you have not disturbed it, there is no problem..

Dropping the trans to get it out of the way will take similar time as dicking around with the linkage. I would hesitate to disturb that stuff.

this is possibly for my stuck bolt thread, but since you raised the issue, the tranny is out for a separate reason. I need to extract a seized bolt from the tranny mount - the one between the tranny and the actual rubber mount. in order for my drill bit to go in at all straight, I need the clearance. but feel free to comment on that too - I might add a note on that thread.

rhett - I wonder if professional Porsche mechanics scoff at these trivialities that get churned up.

Before I start another thread - I am considering replacing the seals 21 and 23B. This means removal of the shift lever.

I can find mention of these seals in the SM but not the removal. Where is this? We already have the table of torque values here. I have a manual tranny and it is a late turbo (best I can tell). The nuts might be single-use. Not sure Clark's helps in details either.

I think oil comes out in this area- it's messy.
