Replacing Power Steering Hoses
Okay I just spent my Friday evening attempting to replace three of the power steering hoses on my 1986 944 Turbo. The line from the reservoir to pump (easy), return line and rack to the return line.
1. I could get the hose from the reservoir to pump off very easily. 2. Could never get the return hose with the hard zig zag lines off. Feels like it's attached to a bracket near the bottom of the windshield washer reservoir. 3. Never attempted to remove the line from the return to the rack. I couldn't even see how I could get my hand or wrench to remove the banjo bolt. So, HELP! Anyone have any suggestions on getting the two hoses out? Do I have to remove the right front wheel and inner fender liner to get to the return? Next how do you even get to the banjo bolt to remove it? Thanks for your help. One last try before I have it towed to a shop? |

The banjo bolt on top of the steering rack is a little tricky to remove. I usually disconnect the steering column from the universal joint, unbolt the rack and drop it out a little so that you can access the top banjo bolt. The stock bolt has an allen key head which normally strips. I had to remove mine with vice grips and then replace it with a normal hex head banjo bolt from a hydraulic supply shop.
And yes, I think you need to remove the wheel liner to get to the other end of the return line.

Thanks Eric. Yikes unbolt the steering column. Man this is turning into a bigger job than I expected. Back under the car I go.
