$175 for four wheels? Man, that's cheap... places here want like $70/wheel and I talked him down to $60..

tstark 11-13-2013 08:48 PM

You'll probably need the small fuel damper line as well (diaphragm to fuel rail).

And the oil cooler seal kit...and alignment tool.

GostRidr 11-13-2013 09:11 PM

Definitely gonna love following this project as I hope it is in my future. What is the inspiration for getting to this now? Also following your smog/horse power upgrades.

Good luck!

I'd replace the coolant Temp Sensor while I was in there (928-606-201-01-M82). And might as well replace the ICV too, I've had a leak on two different ones on my S. They are getting old.

Also new Genuine motor mounts. I got a set of aftermarket ones, but I'll go and redo them with the genuine.

What's your strut condition and which set up do you have? If you have the M303 get them rebuilt at TruChoice and get new ones for the rear. And replace the ball joints on the control arms and the tie rods while you're in there.

Also do the oil cooler and change the o-rings on the oil pressure relief valve since you'll be in there...

And, in the head on the S there's another oil pressure relief valve that's locked in with a set screw. It's located on the bottom left corner if you're looking down at the head from the passenger side. Change the o-rings. I have an extra set you can for $10 shipped. They don't sell the o-rings separate, I had to chase down the right size and spec.

And change the O2 sensor. You can get the Universal Bosch one and solder the wires together. Save a ton of money.

I already replaced that line but I forgot about the oil cooler seal kit! Thanks!

Well I've been saving up some money so I can get as much done at once as possible.
I definitely want some kind of power upgrade since I'm doing all this work so I will be exploring my options!

The coolant temp sensor is on the list! lol

I'm going to hold off on suspension for the moment as I want to do them right and get a good setup. The front struts are yellow so I'm guessing konis?

I will let you know about the o-rings once I start ordering parts.

Thats a good idea for the O2 sensor. Is that an easy job?

02 is VERY easy for someone that is doing what you are doing! A little tricky on getting a wrench to access it as the sensor attaches directly to the top of the exhaust. Wire then rises up into the harness for an easy connection. I did the universal solder/splice that M refers to.

I haven't done most of this stuff. I'm more learning as I do it. haha I'm also trying to gauge how low certain things will take me.

I'm going to drop the whole exhaust so that might make it easier!

When you do the FOES, you will likely need to drill out the Cam Bolt. Just a couple of dollars for a replacement so add it to your list. Great write up on the FOES here:

Front Engine Seals

Don't forget about the special tools if you don't have them already...

mhariush 11-14-2013 08:34 AM

+1 on the new cambolt, that cheese head strips like crazy.

Also, there's two sensors in the block. One is the DME temp sensor the other is the coolant temp sensor, one is 20 and the other is 40. Replace both while you're there.

Can't go wrong with all new hardware :)

Well Mike, I think perhaps you are being a bit conservative with your time estimate there as everyone knows it takes a lot longer than 12 million years to do all the work you are proposing...:):)

You really are going to town on this project..look forward to many a post in the future (with loads of pictures too).

Oh..by the way..stuff will break, its the nature of the beast! ;)

I wish you well and good luck!

mhariush 11-14-2013 12:34 PM

That fastener kit looks very good endat, did you get it? Have any pics of it? I might get that, been thinking about plating bolt myself...

That looks sooooo awesome. I'm one of those guys that replaces every single bolt I take off my car.

Thanks!! I'm really excited. I hope I can do i as I've never rebuilt an engine before. Half these parts I never knew existed in a car!

944S Restoration Parts/Cost
Engine
[LIST][*]Head Work- ? [*]Crank Balanced - ? ;)

Howdy..
Inspriring to hear of your restoration efforts for these fine motorcars.

Apart from the Crank and Head work yet to be priced, your running parts total exceeds $4,000...

Once all of this is complete, how will the re-sale price be impacted?
(Asking anyone who posts)

I realize that selling a restored 944S is not on your to-do list, but I ask merely to understand the market valuation of making our cars nearly like-new..

eg: Is the resale axion something like: 40% of parts restoration money comes back if car is re-sold within 6 months.. or whatever.

Good luck and kudos!
mikey

tamathumper 11-22-2013 07:49 AM

Sadly, resale value will, IMHO, be impacted very little by this or virtually *any* work on P-cars of this age in otherwise "very good" condition.

Howdy Tama..
Oh, How I wish Peart still played Tama's.. :)

Your sig indicates 3 P-rides, has resale after repairs really been independent of replaced parts/investment.. sheesh.
I guess our solace is knowing we did our part to further the life of our vintage classics.

Thanks for the chime.
Peace
