rear wheel bearing grease leakage?
I have some greasy buildup inboard of my wheels (I will try to get the pic over here soon). I figure this is either from the CV boot or the rear wheel bearing area.
is this typical leakage from either area? one of my bearings is rather new - so it might be buildup from the previous one that was not cleaned off. my cv boot is not new, but OK. I could give it another good squeezing to check for problems later.

Looks normal. Some leakage. A lot of it is road debris. Those bolts often get covered in gunk like that -- make sure to clean them before removing them.

so this is a sign the bearing is losing grease - is there a way to pack some more grease in there without breaking the 350-foot-pound nut off?

The bearings are sealed. . .no reliable way to add grease and replace seals.
Don't let that nut slow you down. . .take it apart and replace the bearings if you are committed to keeping the car. Arn has a good tool for the project.

I'm guessing that is from your CV joints and not your bearings. CV's have a ton more grease to leak out than bearings and as Rasta said, they are sealed bearings.
If your bearings are not making noises or your CV's aren't clicking, I would plan to repack your CV joints in the near future. |

I haven't done it yet but multiple owners have actually injected cv grease through the boot to the joint, with something like a marinade injector. They have had surprising success. Of course if you decide to puncture the boot, keep the hole as small as possible. Good luck in any case!

I wouldn't dare poke a hole in those boots. They're known to rip and sling grease as it is, which may be your problem. Carefully inspect your CV boots for any tears. If you've never rebuilt the CVs and replace the boots, I'd suggest getting the kits. And do some reading before you take the actual joints apart...!
