Post your daily driver 944! And stories...

For those of you that are utterly dependent on how it feels that particular day to get to work like me

Hi! I've been a longtime lurker and i'm back into the porsche game and figured I should introduce my car!

Also, daily driver thread! Would love to see some recent pics and hear about your experiences DD'ing these pugilistic p-cars...

I got my first car at age 16, a 1987 924S with 68,000 original miles. Garage kept its whole life.

More than five and a half years, and 56,000 miles later, it's still a daily driver. It's taken me across the country twice and is going to the mechanic later this month for the first time since August 2012 for a full checkup.

I added the black paint myself in the summer of 2012 and the black powdercoated 928 wheels earlier this year. I also have a leather Recaro Sport seat which is fantastic. And a black leather passenger seat out of an old 911 and a leather Dino steering wheel.

(This last picture is before I spent four hours polishing it, after I neglected the paint for more than a year.)

I have been daily beating a few different 944's over the past 10 years, but this is the current daily beater... 86 951 - sport seats, LSD, all burgundy interior, originally Garnet Red exterior. Boring stuff I know. Had to beat it up a bit to give it some flavor.

And yes, it's just plasti-dip. Relax!

Sweet! How'd you get the leather dino wheel to fit? have any pics? and that's awesome you've stuck to it for so long.

It looks great with the camo. plasti-dip is the nectar of the gods.

Are you the one that owns the candy red car in the avatar? i've always wanted that planted stance with thick tires on a car. and wheel options are quite sparse- are you using adapters? you're fortunate to have the early offset!

I posted pictures, could you not see them?

I traded the original steering wheel to a guy who had the Dino one on his car, so it came with a hub for it.

I'm hoping to hit at least a quarter million miles before I restore the car (and probably put a 944 Turbo drivetrain in it). At that point it will no longer be a daily driver, of course. I never intend to sell it.

Here's another picture of mine in nice lighting, a couple years ago before I started the modifications.

Thanks and yep, that is indeed mine

They are 15x8 front and 15x10 rear, no spacers, just a nice low offset with a very deep lip!

I actually got this car in 2004 at age 16 and have had it ever since. Jan 2014 will be 10 years!
Here is how it looked back then. It has evolved through many changes over the years.

Curious, I was thinking about getting a 944 for my teen son. How much is your insurance?

My insurance with Geico from when I was 16-19 was about $92 a month for liability only.

It dropped to around $60 a month at 20, and now at 22 it's around $32 a month for the minimum, so I've added more coverage and I currently have two Porsches and a V8 pickup on it for $67 a month.

I bought this as a project car and to eventually replace my DD (VW Golf). When I first got it:

The brakes and tires where **** when I got it, but I risked driving it anyways because it was amazing to drive. Unfortunately the brakes eventually gave out and the tires offered me no grip, so I had no chance of making the turn at speed. I ended up hitting a guard rail and creasing my fender and ****ing up my bumper, so I decided to upgrade to a turbo bumper. After replacing the bumper I replaced the pads, rotors, SS brake lines, caliper rebuild, paint the calipers, paint the rotor hats, and fluid flush/fill with ATE super blue.

While troubleshooting a start/die issue I noticed one of my spark plugs was crooked. Upon further investigation it turned out to be cross threaded, so I decided to pull the head to get it fixed. While I had it apart I decided to have the head rebuilt (turbo valve springs, valve guides/seals, 3 angle valve job, etc), replace the headgasket, FOES, belts/rollers, water pump, oil change, PS fluid, PS reservoir, water pump, flush/fill the coolant, thermostat, new thermofan switch, new camshaft, paint various items in the engine bay, new vacuum lines, rebuild the throttle body, new 02 sensor, replace the cat, new speakers, new hatch pins/seats, upgrade to the Rouge Tuning MAF, and some more that I'm probably forgetting.

Continued in next post...

Once it was back together I DD'd it for a few months while I fixed a few problems with my VW. Here it is in its prime:

Once my VW was up and running I decided to pull the dash to get it recovered and to make replacing the carpet easier:

Unfortunately I blew the turbo in my VW and bent the rods and ended up with no car. I don't have enough money to buy another DD or the time to rebuild the engine in my VW and I can't get rides from my parents/friends, so I decided to put my 944 back together just enough to make it drivable:

I have been driving it like this for 2 days with absolutely no problems. I think its amazing that my 26 year old half put together POS basket case that I call a Porsche still drives perfectly even in this condition...

That coolant tank is beautiful.

And the gray nose, I just love it.

Oh, steering wheel pictures. Yes, I have one. See below.

I am so happy with my choice of a first car. It's so fun to drive, and I love getting decent fuel mileage at the same time, and having enough cargo space to pack in everything I need for college (which I did last year and drove 2,000 miles to get there.) Recently I went on a road trip with a couple friends in it, and late at night, heading east from Seattle on I-90, I hit 130 mph on a straight and flat section of the interstate, with two passengers and all the luggage for a four day road trip for three people. Engine was at about 5800 rpm's in fifth gear at that speed.

And yes, I know my car so, so well. I also know the twisty mountain back roads around my house very well. One day I was in town and had to go home and back, a 24 mile drive by narrow, winding mountain roads. I did the whole trip in 24 minutes, including a minute spent at home. Top speed during that drive was 100-105 mph and I took some curves with 30-40 mph suggested speed signs at up to 70 mph. Getting back into town I could smell my tires and brakes. Left some skid marks and tire smoke along the way.

It'll all get painted the same color eventually. Just a few more projects to go and I can start on body work...

The interior will go back in when I get another DD, my carpet kit from Classic 9 arrives, and after the dash/seats get recovered.

I did notice that the door cards are very different from my previous 944, which had a vinyl wrap on the door... I thought the additional trim was a custom job but it looked quite OEM... is it?

and happy holidays!
