944S Air Intake Upgrade
Does anyone know where to find a 944S air intake upgrade? I have seen the conversions that allow 944 and 944S2 owners to rip out the airbox and thow in a K&N or other filter, but no one seems to have one of these for the 944S. I have seen some on racing sites, however most will tell you they are custom jobs.
I'm wondering if I'm going to have to make one myself. -S

The air intake for the 944 S is in the front of the engine, not in the wheel well like the others. So a new intake is not necessary cuz you don't have to worry about sucking up water. You can use your stock air box and replace the OEM filter with a K&N or other type of high performance filter. I know that performance products sells the K&N air filter for the 944 S.

Sterrn,
I have an '87 'S' and got a K&N air filter from Zims in Dallas. You can order from them online http://www.***********/ The air filters are under the maintenance category. I just checked and the price on them was $35.95. I get all of my parts there and really like the guys there. Anyway hope this helps. Oh and remember, you have to oil the filter before you put it in. |

yeah
I wish I lived close to Zim's. I bet they let you come in and browse. Zim's has a rotor and dist. cap kit for half of what you can get them anywhere else.

I saw those but had some questions. Is it simply a K&N filter that replaces the stock OEM filer (i.e. the square cardboard one) or is it a full cone style conversion kit that replaces the whole air box and allows you to put on K&N cone filters?

Dude, do it yourself! Buy a K&N cone and stick it under the nose of the car! If you want you can go all out and get that 924GTR or what ever it is front panel with the four rectangular opening to let air directly into the nose! Just make sure you put a shield or sothing to keep water and bugs off the filter!

Sternn,
Sorry I'm just getting back to this thread. Anyway, its just a replacement for the stock filter, I can't honestly tell you how much, if any, difference it makes, but I do like the fact that I can clean and reuse it. That and my son sure likes having his Matchbox car container K&N flitercharger equipped. ![]() todwic, Yeah, I know how lucky I am to have them so close. They're all great guys. Heck, I've spent entire afternoons there talking Porsche. The owner, Al Zim, has been around Porsches forever and loves to sit around and shoot the ****. If you ever need anything from them and you're not quite sure what, ask for Kirk. Not only is he a great guy but he really knows his stuff when it comes to our cars and has helped me out more than once when I was stuck. |

I have spoke with a couple of guys who have switched theirs out on their own 944S cars for track purposes. They continue to tell me it is extremely easy, so once I get my back back in two weeks (when the shop finishes the other work), I am going to start building one for myself. I think one guy put it best when he said:
1. Buy K&N cone filter. 2. Buy pipe. 3. Rip out airbox and connect K&N cone filter to pipe. 4. Gain HP and drink beer. -S

Hah. Actually NA'FAC is like an hour (or 'aaahr') form here (but I do visit often).
They called today to let me know the intake manifold and valve covers have been blasted and powdered. Now if I can just get the guys rebuilding my head to hurry up I can have it back in one piece by this weekend, so I can rip it apart again and start on the custom MAF. And drink beer. -S
