Starting my winter projects on my 88 924s, I tackled the heater control valve project. Attaching that clip to he cable is turned int a frustrating afternoon, but my question is the following:
How does the hose from the heater control valve hose to the fire wall attach at the firewall? It appears that the hose enters the firewall and is only accessible from the inside of the car? If that is the case? |

Attaches to heater core inside the heater box. Very big pita to get to. Dash Removal is the best way to get to it.

Thank You, but what a poor design by Porsche. There should be a bulkhead connector at the firewall to connect the hose to. There is no way I am going to remove the dash, so I will have to take my chances with the 26 year old hose.

You're right about that. The good news is they don't leak often. In fact, I've never had one leak. The pressures are pretty low. I did change a heater core on wifey's 924 but it wasn't leaking. Went in to change an O-ring. Imagine! The whole dash just for that silly little O-ring. Needless to say, I did a pile of WYIT stuff to make it worth while.

That clip is a tough reinstall, I drilled a very small hole (the smallest bit I could find) in one corner and attached a very thin piece of wire as a tag line so when it wouldn't keep dropping into the black hole underneath as I was trying to fit it back on.
Good luck, Jon

It was a truly boneheaded move to place the hose clamps inside the passenger cabin. My hoses are still in great shape as far as I know but I have thought about replacing them some day. Removing the dash alone will not give access to the hose clamps without removing the heater also but to remove the heater you would have to remove the hoses. But to remove the hoses I suspect one would have to drop the AC unit. I suspect that dropping the air conditioner located under the passengers side of the dash may be "all that's needed" to get to the clamps without removing the dash or heater unit. It is easy to remove the glove box and passenger kick panel but the AC unit still blocks access to the clamps. Good luck & have fun.

And after ALL that, as Haynes says, "Installation is the reverse of removal." Such a simple little sentence...

any other tricks for this replacement?
Hi,
I apparently have a heater control valve that is sticking. The control lever on the dash won't go all the way back and forth. I'll check for kinks or obstructions first, but expect it may need to be replaced. Any tricks to this - other than find someone with small hands? Where did you get your valve from? Thanks Chuck |
