85 944 engine easy to work on?

I had my 85.5 944 parked for over 3 years..... It was because i damaged a fuel line while chaning the clutch.... Now I just got the fuel line and thinking of putting it together...... I am thinking of getting the engine a kinda tune up....

I am wondering if it is easy and neccessary to take the head off and do vavle jobs? and is it easy to do? Is it easy to do timing belt? Not looking into adding power just want a reliable car....

I had done similar things to honda and mitsubishi 4 cylinders, wondering if 944 would be that much different... and what are the watch-outs?

Thanks in advance.

lol

Go to Clark's Garage and read everything there under Shop Manual, then you will be in a better position to ask specific questions.

Why do you think it needs a valve job? Low compression? Burning oil? Oily plugs and/or valves? How many miles are on it?

Get ready to spend big bucks on the "while you're in there" stuff. I spent over 2k when I took the head off my 88 NA. I did a ton of things your car may or may not need (front seals, oil cooler gaskets, all new coolant hoses, etc) and that stuff adds up quick.

Sounds like you need to drain the fuel (if you haven't already), get the fuel lines done, replace the timing and balance belts, change the oil and filter, and take her out for a good spin to get things warmed up - and hopefully then she will start speaking to you.

These cars are pretty easy to work on. Knew nothing about cars untill, and really started working on my current car (7 years), and with the help on here and the write ups on Clarks-garage really helped me out. All work was done by me, clutch, timing, head job, etc... never dove into car jobs before, and they were all straight forward, except for rusted/ stuck bolts. All you need is time, patience, and metric tool sets, and a few select Porche only tools (timing belts tools, clutch alignment, etcs.....)

Agree with thekidd. Get a set of factory manuals for your car. This will allow you to obtain torque settings, and understand how the car is put together. Go slow, be detailed and stay patient. It is an aluminum engine and you don't want to strip threads, etc. I have purchased metric tap and die pieces to help clean blots and treads, if necessary. So, read a lot on this thread and gain from others. Folks are willing to help out. Buy the tension tool set from Arnnworx and you will be in good shape for belts changes. Learn the electrical system, relays, fuses, etc. I did purchase a "cherry picker" so that I could change engine mounts and eventually do a clutch job. I will need to purchase an engine stand soon. It's enjoyable and these cars are fun to drive.

Between this (and other forums), factory service manuals, Haynes manual (for 8v motors only), and Clarks Garage, I can perform most any job, large or small.

Oh yeah, lots of time and a fairly heavy wallet are needed too...
