maintenance

I have recently booked in for a few jobs to be done on my s2, timing and balance belts new pulleys and a water pump, (while it's there) quite an expense, but from reading this board, probably a good move (77000 miles). It also is due for a service, timewise rather than miles, and I got to thinking that although the belts etc would worry me, there are plenty of things on the service schedule that I could do myself as reading through the list confirmed. The car has a full porsche history so far but as it's now 13 years old I wonder how important that is. There are however a few items on this service schedule that I would like to ask you about.

1 can valve clearances be checked without removing head?
2 diagnosis system---There seems to be no facility for read out of system faults on s2.
3 is the transmission and axle oil combined?
4How do I check function of oxygen sensor?

Hope i'm not asking too much -----Thanks.

For the oxygen sensor do a Google search.http://www.forparts.com/o-21.htm
is a starting place. Also try a search on Pelican Parts. Someone posted a procedure some time ago, I think. I have a copy of it but don't have web address. It was written by Rick Kirchoff.

Oils are combined on my 951. Before you empty, make sure you can get filler plug out.

The S2 has hydraulic lifters; no valve clearance to measure.
If it has a diagnosis plug (some very early ones don't) you need the Bosch KTS300 to read the faults, which inlcudes the O2 sensor.
You can also check the sensor with a digital multimeter.
