Bad DME??? 1984 944 nonturbo

I have a 1984 nonturbo 944 that I got as a project car. I was told it need a fuel pump which was accurate and I replaced along with other fuel components that were bad ie injectors. The coil was also in need of replacement.

So at this point I have been doing lots of research on this car because I made the mistake of listening to a mechanic who thought he knew what was wrong and think I replaced a few parts that didnt need to be like the mass airflow meter.

I have spark and fuel when I start the car. The car will start and stay running if I keep the key in the start potion (i have a kill switch on the starter as to not burn it up). When the key is released to the run potion, the car dies. I am stumped except to say that I have no real way to test my DME. I dont know anyone else in the area personally that would let me try my DME in their car or vice a versa. I'm hoping that someone knows how to test a DME or could unplug theirs and let me know how the car reacts while trying to start without the DME.

Any suggestions are welcomed. I really want to get the car running so I can continue the work I started on the interior and drive it!!!!!

Thanks to all that post.

I don't think your DME is bad as it probably wouldn't run after starting.

Replace your ignition switch. Part No. 111-905-865L.

sounds like a bad ignition switch. but i had dme nightmares of my my own. i bought a used one from a member and it solved my problems( after being at a porsche dealer for 3 months( and he told me my dme was fine) i just guessed and that was the problem) you should replace your dme relay first or at least jump it to rule out simple problems first

Like others have said, have you tried to replace the cheapest part first? And get rid of that kill switch too.

Yes I have replaced the ignition switch and the DME relay. I even thought maybe I got a bad DME so I made the three way wire and jumped it. Nothing seems to alter the problem at this point. Which is why I think it could be my DME. It could also be a wire. I wouldn't know how to begin testing for that. It had an after market alarm installed which had the kill switch for the starter. I removed all components of it. Didn't change anything. Is there anyway that I can test the DME plug to see if it is getting proper voltage where it should?

Best thing would be to find someone local to you that can test your dme in their car or have someone test it for you.

I would offer, but I have a late car so I can't.

I don't think is the DME . It will not start at all if it is Bad. Sound like you have Ignition switch (electrical ) problem.
With the key in run position ! Do you have all power like gauges move/radio/headlight/fan ect.
You could also check the coil is there power to it, also fuel pump should be running
Parking light is on without the key.
I have done that get a rebuild DME and it was not the problem (Just wasted $500.00)
Good Luck

Bud 9344. Excellent pinpointing down the problem as I see it. Itīs important to see what is working or not but this demands wire drawings to follow all cirquits involved. Clarke's garage is very helpful here. It MUST be the DME-relay to blame.

I can send a dme if you want? Just send it back if that doesn't take care of it.

Parking light will be lit up with key removed if turn signal isn't cancelled.
