FS: '83 manual steering rack, sport option

Video has pretty much all the information:

Porsche 944 manual steering rack for sale (sport option) - YouTube

I will add that there is a bolt you can turn to dial out all play in the steering. I took apart the mechanism and re-lubed it (as I thought it took too much force to turn the pinion shaft) but ended up putting it back to how it was configured. It's a spring-tensioner mechanism, and works perfectly. However, I noted that taking it down to practically no play increases the force needed to turn the pinion shaft by a significant amount. Not so much much that steering would be stressful, but you'll feel it.

$275 OBO

Number does not exist in Porsche parts catalog. . .probably a casting number.

First developed for the factory race cars so probably not in any production parts catalogue.

Regular manual rack is 944 347 011 00. 944 347 015 00 is "sport" version that they used in early offset 944 turbo cup cars, you could get it on regular 951 or 944 too, but in some kind of sport package only. Ratio is quicker. GLWS

I'm curious to see a rack with the 944 347 011 00 number on it. Reason being.... I've seen lots of 015 racks, but never the "non sport".

I was reading a thread on Rennlist and there was a squabble about it. There was a guy with an 011 rack and he reported that it was 4 turns lock to lock. My '83 has the 015 rack and it's 3.5 turns lock to lock.

Sale is pending, I'll update if it falls through for some reason.

It sold a few months ago, and actually turned out to be slightly bent, so it was junk (if anyone is interested in losing $250, I suggest buying one without carefully measuring and inspecting it).

Ahh, yes, they can bend. A string impact to the suspension, would bend the control arm and inner tie rod. But since it's not visibly unless the rack is disassembled, it does not get replaced with the other components. Other than stiff operation, the bent rack will no longer center after making a turn and/or jerk during turns.

I just picked up a manual rack... But it did not have the intermediate shaft. Would you be willing to sale it, sense the rack isn't usable?
