Is a cone filter worth it?
Hey gang, I have a test pipe on my 86 944 na, along with a K&N filter, but is it even worth it to get the cone filter setup? Or will it suck in more inside warm air? Thanks.

good question... any cone-type filter will get you better total volume into the system when the engine is spinning well... typically you will notice some loss in low-end grunt as the velocity IN is lost.
ALSO, unless there is an effective source of outside air AND some sort of heat-shielding device for the intake, you will deal with significant heat-soak and likely loose power overall... but i went to b-school, so what do i know?

Yes, I am running "Catless"...I have owned 3 RX-7 turbo's...And I found that stock air system to be quite restrictive... But my car is a na, so I wouldn't expect it to have that much effect on my current 944. So, loose some low end but gain it back & then some in the high RPM's...I have seen some of those heat shield setups. Does anyone have any experence with them? Pro's cons? Thanks!

the biggest advantage to a cone filter is the actual surface area of the filter, if you were to use a flat filter with the same surface area there would be no difference. the key is to get "cold" air to the filter (i.e. from outside the engine bay).
but......keep in mind porsches are built with more precise engineering than a honda, using a k&n or other cone type filter on a 911 is not recomended, so i'm sure the same applies to a water cooled p-car, the factory paper filter can filter smaller dust than a cone type which will translate to better combustion in the cylinder and add longevity to the engine. i would modify my stock air box with an equal or larger diameter tube to bring air in from outside the engine bay before i would put on a cone filter.
