Hi!

attached is a wiring diagram of the 1984 944 alternator/starter wiring.

The bottom "wire" shows ground connections to body.

D+ is a blue wire and goes to something on the instrument panel, i'm guessing voltage meter/some charging indicator?

B+ is a huge wire connected to the battery cable at the starter, this means that the alternator always is connected to the battery. Doesn't matter if the starter is bad or not, as long as these wires are connected together.

Make sure the alternator is connected via the starter, to the battery, and that the alternator bracket is connected to ground(if not, clean your grounds!)
