What else can I do?

Please help, I have a starting problem with my 1984 944. It was running fine before this winter’s cold/snow month and a half long event. Then it was taking many tries to start when cold but would not when hot until it cooled off. Found the high pressure fuel line didn’t hold pressure. The line was seeping at the tube to hose connection under the hood. Fixed that and also added a new pump, filter and check valve drained and refilled the tank with fresh fuel. Then it was still only starting after many tries so I checked everything again and found I wasn’t always getting spark. I checked the ignition, bad coil; I changed that, the cap, rotor, ignition wires and spark plugs, still no effect. During the coil changeover I inadvertently turned the ignition to the on position and the coil primary leads came into contact with the inner fender, at that point I could smell something burning in the cab. Now it still only starts after many tries and when it does it will keep running when the key is turned to the off position but all other systems do turn off. The only way to get the engine to stop is after many tries is to take the key out, put it back in and turn it to the auxiliary position then it stops. I changed the ignition switch in the steering Column, the old one was cracked but this had no effect. What else can I do?

Sounds like you likely have some burnt, shorted wires under the dash.

As to the starting - how about your injectors? And how is your compression?

The long starting time almost sounds like it's building fuel pressure

Compression good, all cylinders easily within 5%. Fuel pressure at the rail good 29 psi. Leak down 20 minutes >14psi, injectors? I'll check them next then. Thank you.
