924 top speeds
So far, I have only been able to reach a top speed of about 105-107 mph in my NA '79 924. I have read that the top speed on these cars is "supposed" to be 120 mph. Has anyone else here had a better top speed in a NA 924. Is there a speed limiter that I am not aware of. I'm running a Jacobs Omni Magnum ignition with stock coil.

a couple things..
1) dude, the car is 23 years old, between lost compression, clogged ports/runners, and god knows what else... still hitting 105 is pretty good. 2) "stock coil" is likely torched if it is original. this all from my experience with old muscle cars, so not p-car specific, but usually pretty universal in application.

I've already rebuilt the head only 3-5000 miles ago (speedo screwed). I also have excellent compression. A performance header and exhaust sytem with a test pipe. Also only running Chevron Supreme gas (92 octane).

"excellent compression" may still be several points less than it originally... and there is pretty much a direct and proportional relationship between compression and power. and above 100mph, it takes a signigicant increase in power to see any real movement in top speed.
other thing to check.... plug wires? those will cost you dearly in the upper ranges. and what about the throttle valve? is it 100% perfectly functional... maybe there's an issue with the oxygen sensor?... I'm just htinking out loud here, trying to give you something to go on.

Mixy, if you haven't changed you O2, I recomend you do so. I did this used the Ford number that's heated and saved $100. It's the best $40 I've ever spent on my '84 '44. Thank you, Mr. Wilk

Hi
I just drove mine 924 / 1982 to work and it clocked 125mph - bearing in mind that mine is the european model with the 125BHP Engine. There was still room left to push the pedal further. A while back my friend drove it and reached 135mph but this was slightly (not much) downhill. My temp went up like a rocket - ( this was before the headgasket and temp switch change) - I dont really drive the car fully to its limit as mentioned before they are afterall 20 odd years old. Just my 2 pennies. Frankydoom |

This vehicle doesn't have an O2 sensor. Plug wires are also Jacobs and the throttle is functional. I do however need to get a replacement grommet for the accelerator cable to throttle body lever, however I doubt this to be a hinderance on the top end performance.

Is your speedo accurate? Also the early cars were rated at 110mph. The 1980-1982 cars were the ones that were rated to 120... acutally tests showed 123mph with the rear hatch spoiler.
I have had mine up that high. What were your rpms at the time and in what gear. The 924 will hit top speed in 4th gear. 5th is an overdrive. Eric www.geocities.com/eturbo924

Speedo is acurate. Not sure what RPM I was running, however I was in 5th gear. According to my spec sheet for the early models, they have a rating of 120 mph. Then again, as stated by someone else, the car does have a few years on it. The tires I have on right now are only "S" rated, meaning they are only rated for up to 115 MPH. It's not likely that I want to go much faster than I have already with these tires as it is.
