968 Mirror Upgrade Procedure
New procedure for upgrading to 968 Aero Mirrors is now complete and online. This procedure includes info on how to "unlock" the base from the mirror housing.

The 12 mm 12 point bit that is used on the flywheel fits the hollow retaining bolt. While the spring is rather stout I have assembled mirrors using this bit wedged into a 3/8" drive socket, some careful pressure and bath towel padding.
Pelican does have the correct size metric tool to remove the pins from the connectors. I would use it first before having to cut off the existing pins. The post 85.5 mirrors can be used on the pre 85.5's. You have to change the directional "switch" to the newer one and use the newer mirror selector switch. I have the selector switch mounted in the door as putting it in the console would require running an extra wire. I have rewiring notes some where that I can finalize and post. |

As for the extractor pin, if you will supply a link to the tool I will gladly correct the procedure and credit you in the procedure. I have spent the last several minutes searching the Pelican site for the tool and I can't find it. That of course doesn't mean it's not there, it's just not where I would think it would be. The procedure was written with the goal of a repeatable process using readily available tools. The "metric" pin extractor tool is not readily available in my area (Houston) so it was not included in the procedure. If Pelican has the tool, then I will happily list the tool and give this as an option. By the way, new pins and connectors are only $2.99 per side - it's cheap and easy, but I too would prefer to use the Porsche connectors if possible. Thank you for your comments. Please - everyone - feel free to comment further. My goal is to have the definitive procedure on this subject so no one will need to "experiment" as I did and waste both time and money. If you have suggestion, comments, or alternate ways of accomplishing the same thing - I'd love to hear them! |
Lisle #56500 (prefered)
http://www.lislecorp.com/tools/catalog/electrical/elect1.htm AMP part # 305183 Personally I think there should be two plugs for the side mirrors. One to replace the transmissions inside the "wing" and one inside the door to help in quickly removing the entire mirror assembly and not let it bang against the side of the car. This is not one of Porshe's better designs. Yes your compression tool is trick! I'll stick with the 12 mm tool. |
I agree on the "Two Plugs". Another alternative is to order the wiring harness plug and connectors, then cut and reattach. I'm big on this cutting thing aren't I! :D Well actually, I'm big on finding the parts local. It would be nice if Porsche had included everything you need, but they only include what the local Porsche dealer would need. I'll have to assume they already have the tool.
I still can't find the tool on Pelican, however I was able to use www.google.com to find suppliers for both tools you suggested.;) I'll add your info to the first revision - which will include part numbers for each item in the mirror kit. |
You can find Lisle tools at most well stocked autoparts stores -- not necessrily Pep Boys or Kragen. Look for a NAPA store that has a machine shop.
There is always mail order. I have a problem waiting those couple of days. Of interest is that the round black dual motor mirror transmissions are basicly the same ones being used in most US made cars. May not have the same mounting adaptors or wiring harness but parts is parts. |
