Painting plastic bumper
Hey
This isn't for a 944 but a 996 and seems people here are a bit more DIY than the 996 forum, and more active... I got bumped and the rear cover flexed and cracked the paint. I have an air compressor and I was thinking of trying to tackle painting it myself. Anyone have experience with this? Artic Silver. Where's the best matching paint? Add flex agent? Mix in clear coat in paint or do a separate clear coat layer? removed the bumper today. No damage behind it. ![]()

No, got the driver's info and I got a settlement from State Farm. But I thought it would be a good learning experience to try and tackle. Worst case, I strip it off again and send it off to paint.
Was a very light bump. Waiting in a starbucks parking lot and the driver didn't realize how close she was to me when she pulled into the parking lot and went over the very high curb/bump I'll do the repair and primer myself to save some bucks. And I want to paint the bumperette's too while I'm in there.

I learned the hard way that I didn't have the skill or facility to do a good job. Sent it off to a pro he is a painter at a real good shop but he also has a nice shop at his home saved a ton. as far as what to do for paint I would post on the paint board.

Yeah, please don't do it. It's not a skill you'll master doing it once.

Have a pro do the paint job. I learned the hard way that you need a $300 spray gun to get a decent paint job and even with a good gun you need lots of practice. Then you still need to color sand and buff it out. Modern paints require a clear coat to look like the original paint. Matching silver is hard even with the color code. With the mistakes, we painted some of our airplane parts 4 or 5 times.

I agree with everyone above. The silver (grey metallic) color is one of the hardest to match, almost impossible to do it perfectly. I had may VW CC rear bumper repainted by the local dealer who specializes in paint work and although if you have not trained eye you will not see the difference, but it is still visible at certain angles, especially on pictures.
