Made some progress recently.. Found a bad reference sensor which was nice to discover and I found that the engine was rotating counterclockwise when I was trying to start the engine. I removed the starter and saw that there is an arrow on it that seemingly points counterclockwise. I'm thinking that the starter is not original to the car as it spins the engine counterclockwise. I got a new starter on order and it will be here in the morning. I also will order a new reference sensor as well as a speed sensor, just to make sure both are new. Hoping to hear the engine run once those are in.

[QUOTE=mazdaverx7;8102217]All of the lights are in working order:

Dash warning lights that come on. Not sure if this is all of them or if there should be more:
This is the warning ligths which you should see with the ignition on see pics (they are from my ex 968) but yours should pretty well be the same.

Cluster lighting seems dim and the lighting seems to be only radiating from the bottom upward:.....Time to redo your cluster ligth no doubt.

Ernie, you are correct, the light is only radiating upward from the bottom of the cluster. Time to pull it and replace all of the bulbs!

I installed a new starter yesterday before work and the engine fired right up and coughed to life for the first time in ten years!! I let it run and get up to normal operating temperature bled the cooling system and monitored the coolant temp and oil pressure. I saw no apparent leaks and the engine idled about 1300 rpm. I decided to drive the car up the road and back..I just couldn't resist. It drive great and all drivetrain components work as they should.

The only issue I noticed was that the engine rpms slowly crept up to 2000 rpm. So while its not perfect I knew there would be small issues to work out. For now though it runs and I couldn't be happier!

Here are a couple pics. One of the cluster and the other one my wife took as I pulled out of the driveway:

The lower radiator hose burst tonight. I took the car up the road after changing the oil and when I parked it, I noticed that coolant was gushing out of the right front underneath the car. Couldn't have happened at a better time as it happened with the engine off and the car parked in the driveway. Going to get a new hose on order first thing tomorrow.

The volt meter was working ok tonight but the speedometer was not. Got some digging to do there..

Once I finish the top end on my 86 I will be back in full swing on this. Next step is to get a pair of working door handles.. It makes getting into the car difficult, lol.

Decided to look into the non working speedometer and after disassembling the unit, I found a fried resistor. Time to order the Arnnworx rebuild kit and a new odometer gear. Here's what I found:

Ordered the Arnnworx rebuild kit. Once that comes in I can start getting things buttoned up.

Decided to try and repair one of my bumper pads that had fallen off. All of the studs pulled out of the bumper pad and were hanging in the bumper. I cleaned the area where the studs were molded into the rubber. I then used an epoxied in M8 bolts with a washer as a base. Once the epoxy was dry, I filled the surrounding areas with gorilla glue. I then bolted the bumper pad back on and while it doesn't sit entirely flush due to what I believe is a metal reinforcement expansion (due to rust), it still look ok and will serve the purpose until I can replace it with a new pad.

Here's the pad ready to go on:

What I started with on the bumper:

Bumper prepped for pad install:

Pad installed.Note the small gap in the second picture due to the rusty internals of the pad:

Finally welded the rearward window channel in and installed my driver's side window and door handle. Feels good to have that buttoned up:

After some rubbing compound and a wash. Next step is to wax the car. I'm not expecting much as the paint is shot, but it will be better than nothing.:

Got the car in the garage today and replaced the front bumper shock that was caved in and fixed and re installed the right front bumper pad. Also sealed the hatch, installed the door pockets and speaker grills. Took my wife for a ride in the car tonight and she said she really like it and was impressed by the comfort of the seats. Today was a win!

Bumper removed and new shock installed:

Bumper pad repaired by installing a new "stud":

Speaker covers and lower pocket installed:

Windshield sealant applied to upper hatch area:

The car has been running and driving well and has been my daily driver for the last month. Issues that I need to address still are:

-fuel gauge inop
-engine coolant temp gauge erratic
-original Koni shocks and struts need rebuilt
-paint
-front of engine service
-left side sunroof catch

Here are a couple updated pics of the car:

Finally fixed the carpet:

Fighting a couple coolant leaks currently. It seems to only leak when its sitting after the engine is warm and not running. That or I don't notice it until then.

Gotta get the car out for some fall pics as well..

Here's a few thoughts I have, having been down the same road:

Is the fan coming on after you get the car real warm and shut the engine down? If not the thermo switch on the radiator could be bad (common failure item). Also replace the coolant overflow tank pressure cap with the PROPER one, if that's where the coolant is coming from.

Next, if you push the bumpers in, you have no protection if someone bumps into your car. It could cause body damage.

I'd recommend getting the silicone vacuum line replacement kit and getting a leg up on potential vacuum leaks. It may be why your car isn't responding as it should. Also, might want to replace the little rubber O rings in the throttle body butterfly shaft. They're probably hard and leaking air by now.

The reason your wife loves the seats is because they were designed and made for Porsche by Recarro.

There's a myriad of other areas of concern that you'll likely run into with this car, but it's worth it. Mechanically challenging, electrically frustrating but end the end ultimately rewarding.

You'll find another header panel on ebay and easily the proper color. They're easy to replace. Take good care of those "script" seats. They're precious.

I did a post on the upgrading of the panel lights that's simple and should be done while your panel is removed. I'll be happy to share the details with you if you can't find it.

Good luck on your find. If you have any questions and need help, PM me or do your normal stuff here on the forums.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.
