My 85.2 Restoration Project

I've been wanting an 85.5 and up for some time and this one spoke to me as a major restoration effort. So what if it hasn't been on the road in 10 years. Its deserving of a restoration and I will learn a lot by bringing this car back from an inevitable doom. It speaks to me not only because its a 944, but because it has some nice options and the car is mostly unmolested. The initial pics were pics from the guy I got the car from:

Made it home safe and sound with the car Saturday morning after driving all night Friday. Its now tucked away safely in my garage. I played with it a little and it has a lot of issues which I will post about.

Here are the first few pics of the car once it was officially mine :

Car loaded on the trailer with the pic being taken right after leaving the seller's house:

Pit stop in Columbus on the way home:

Home tucked away safely in my garage (and my son already installed the spare Porsche crest I had in my other 944's center console):

Thanks, I was trying to post more pics but the forum would not allow me to do so without mod approval. Once that is done, I will have the rest of the pics up of everything that I've been doing to the car. Its really a well optioned car and a solid platform to start with!

Started cleaning the engine bay and when doing so, discovered a small amount of oil in the air cleaner housing. Perhaps something is not right with the AOS. I checked the timing and balance shaft belts and both are intact with some deflection. All I wanted to know was if they were in place and to make sure they were not broken. Going to do those fist off. Here are some pics:

Oil in the air cleaner housing:

Pics of the belts:

Engine bay as of right now:

Found this odd metal plate in the box of parts that I got with the car. Oddly enough, the front license plate bracket is bolted to it, lol:

Finally got the hatch open. Had to disconnect the rods and move them manually and it came right open. Here are some pics of what I found:

This wiring..Maybe went to a car phone at one time? Not sure but it was run to the battery and the fuse box:

A bunch of yuck:

Thought this was kinda nice:

And next to the fire extinguisher, was this amazing piece. I'm not sure if its complete:

I had an antenna on my rear hatch and thought it was for a phone system but later found out it was for a security altert system that called your pager if the car was being broken into. This looks like a good car for restoration.

Thank you!! Where was the control module mounted for that security system?? I'd be interested to see if I have the same thing. The antenna will be off there soon. I may end up replacing the hatch due to heave separation.

Got my little helper on the job. He's been a big fan of my 944's since he was just a wee little guy. Always has to sit in the car and pretend he's driving. Until the tools come out, then its "Dad, what I can fix?" Caught him hanging out in the back seat the other day:

Good news!! I removed the starter and had it tested at two auto part stores today and both places said that the starter was good. I ended up buying a Napa battery and came home and re-installed the starter and installed the new battery. Just for the heck of it, I cranked the engine over and it cranked normally! No more slow cranking!! I'm excited!

Starter re-installed:

While I was under there, I did notice another thing that needs attention:

Took a few pics today when I was in the garage:

Original key:

Fuchs are original and in decent shape for the age and neglect:

Damage to the front nose panel:

Engine bay as it currently sits:

Fuel system components being replaced and cleaned. Fuel pump is bad and I plan on sending the injectors out to be cleaned:

Rear carpet is in nice shape still:

All of the lights are in working order:

Dash warning lights that come on. Not sure if this is all of them or if there should be more:

Cluster lighting seems dim and the lighting seems to be only radiating from the bottom upward:

Last shot before I went to work:

There is a nice section in Clarks garage on sorting dashboard lights. The bulbs go dull/fail over time and the silvering off the reflectors flakes off/dulls. Can all be fixed relatively easily ... but you have other priorities

Good luck with your project! I bought a good low km running well maintained '91 S2 and there is enough work for me just keeping up with the daily maintenance You are brave!
