The Affordable 944 Thread
The 996 guys started a thread like this, and it is running strong. I put it here instead of in 'Off Topic' because the 944 community is considerably smaller. Mods, feel free to move if you feel this is inappropriate here (Hehehehehe...like you need my permission!!!) I think this will allow us lookers to access more cars for sale.
So my first post is from fellow Pelicanite, JScaramella. For Sale - Very Clean 1985.5 844

IF it were for sale, what should be the price? Buyer beware, it needs a little TLC. Extremely nice interior, sports seats and wheels, new wp/foes/belts, otherwise mostly original including clutch...

If I were in the market to add another 944, I'd be driving south on the NJ Turnpike right now to check out John's car.

Yes!! My 15min of fame. LOL kidding. Flattered that my car is up there. Everytime I see it I question if I should sell it, but then again Ive done this many times before. Im a pay it forward guy and love to say that they leave me better than they arrived. I'm of the opinion that these are everybit as desierable as an early 911. Cant beat the build quality and affordability. I want to go racing again and only have the mental capacity for 1 to 2 cars at a time. So this vision must go. One day I'll have enough space to keep them all.
Keep the thread moving so someone can enjoy hearing about the ownership of these cars! |

This thing's been for sale for at least a couple months. Not sure of its true condition.

I love 944s (have owned about ten of them), but relative to the Porsche market as a whole, isn't an "affordable 944" thread about as selective as a "stainless DeLorean" thread? Perhaps "exceptional 944" would be a better title and purpose for this thread?
![]() Really, though, given the general affordability of 944s and the wide range of condition in which they can be found, I think highlighting the best, cleanest, most unique, and most desirable examples of 944s would serve everyone here better, and help to raise the image and standard of 944s as a whole. Hmmmmm. Didn't think about that. I do a lot of things without thinking about it!

I, too, wrote without thinking enough -- please see my clarifying edit.
Great idea to start this thread, by the way!

Never been much of a fan of red P-Cars, but this one could change a lot of opinions. Gorgeous!

Don't really want a black car, but this is close to me. Don't know what a 'Ventilator' motor is. Not sure he knows much about the car. Shud be 3.0L not 2.5L, correct? 120k miles and looks a little high end priced. Engine and/or tranny rebuild would be costly.

It looks like a nice interior and exterior but seems overpriced considering the mechanical maintenance that has been performed. I paid 3500 for my 87S w/ 97k miles, purchased from a Porsche trained mechanic and he had replace the fuel system and the DME. I looked at several S cars for sale and most suffered from low oil pressure probably due to the extra HP the 16V motor puts out. Also there is a cam chain hydraulic tensioner that is typically replaced in the 100k mile window that runs $500 for the part alone. This is on top of the normal cam belt all 944's have. I also replaced the brake rotors and struts to bring it up to road worthiness. I still have a few things more to do including the steering rack and lines, and replacing a cracked dash. I can't imagine the car being worth $15k even with all of this done.

Tanx. You just confirmed what I was thinking. I can get a base all day long in really nice shape for 5-6k. That might be just fine, don't know. I've yet to drive a 944, so it's clear I really don't know what I would be happy with.

Another black one. Looks pretty clean, especially the interior. Those are some butt ugly wheels and tires!!!
