Consequence of mixing up lifters?
Greetings,
In the process of removing the cam assembly on my 87 951, even being a careful as I could be, I still managed to have a couple of lifters slide out (no damage). I am almost certain that I have them all back in their original locations - but not 100% certain. If I somehow didn't manage to get them all back in their original locations what are the consequences? (All I have ever known is that it is important to get them all back in their original locations, not what happens if I don't). Thanks! |
Its best to get them back in correctly, but youll be fine. Your not the first one to maybe mix them up. Your only alternative is to buy new ones anyway.

Accelerated wear as they get happy with their new homes. That's all.

In practice, this doesn't seem to amount to much of an issue. The cams are extremely hard. When we measure them for compliance reasons, it is always amazing how little wear there is. Tolerances were pretty tight on the lifters. I wouldn't stress too much. In 944 Spec we prefer good used lifters to the crappy INA replacements in any case.

Clean them thoroughly (diesel fuel or wd40 soaking/scrub) and then reinstall with a good bath of assembly lube all over. A dab of lube on top of the valve stem where they make contact with the bottom of the lifter is also good idea. Although I like to keep them in order I've never seen any indicators of accelerated wear or other problems when they're mixed - cleanliness is far, far more important to reduce wear.

I hade like 30 lifters soaking in oil and I picked the best ones when I did my motor build. You'll be ok.

Many thanks.
I had assumed that barring existing wear that this shouldn't too be much a problem (at least I couldn't think of any reason that it would be - but what do I know?) but feel much better now knowing. I certainly didn't want to have to replace any of them. All the lifters look really good with no real visible wear showing so, after all your replies, I feel pretty safe now. Thanks again. |
None. Mine are in different holes with a different camshaft.
