anybody Got Paint lately ?
what did you pay ?
I stopping in some shops and the guy saying 8,000 ish in not on my final list. I should tell him its a Poorsche, not one of the 911 screamers Seems like 700 plus or so from the PPG alone paying retail for Red and some clear coat. I miss the days when you could find rent a booths. appreciate any info, especially details |

8k sounds reasonable (maybe even really reasonable!) to do a proper glass-out, panels-off exterior respray.
If you (DIY) pull all the glass and panels, maybe 5k. But then of course you need to tow it. You could get it done really badly for probably 1.5k. Lame masking job, minimum prep (what prep?), and runs. No panel/glass removal. No one can really comment on the 8k for a paint job without hearing exactly what it entails. A masked respray? panel/glass out respray? Partial body respray? FYI - if your "red" is Guards Red there is no clear coat. Guards Red is a single stage paint with the clear coat mixed in. Any bodyshop can mix an amount of paint if you give them code and year. Last edited by FrenchToast; 06-17-2014 at 05:31 PM.. |

thanks! jeezus I have been out of touch with the paint world.
8 grand no way. Cant justify it unless you guys get the word out that these cars are worth 50 K semi - restored Oh well always wanted to rent a booth ( lucky have someone in town for a 1~2 $100 and have a go. Looks like another thing to do this summer ! I already pulled & de-adhesived all my panels. I am half way done on the new rag top, want to get it stretched then pull the whole frame, to minimize chance of a nice scratch in the new paint. Staying in color, red at birth, red again. It looked like my (original ?) paint had a clear over, are you talking tinted clear to finish or all color coats mixed ? Can you point me to any resources on the particulars ? thanks in advance. The whole interior is out to the floor rug. I was going to paper & tape the glass, maybe pull the ( cracked) windshield ( and get the fresh glass out from behind the couch!) paper the under side bits & suspension, paint it in to the jamb joint and the fender bolts. time to study up, keep them rocking comments advice and occasional dope slaps coming |

I've had a couple of bids for paint jobs here in SW Florida. Both are simply block sand, prime and respray. Not taking the paint down to the bare metal since the car was previously sealed and poorly painted. One didn't include jams or windows off and it was $2300. The other was 3 grand and included disassembly. Both good shops with good work examples. A custom shop here was up for doing the car for $5000. Don't know why 10 grand on a $4000 car makes much sense unless you're planning on keeping the car (like me).

i drove my 944 to the paint shop without bumpers, any windows, mirrors, sunroof, headlights, nose panel, associated seals..with the tail lights ziptied in place...amazingly the heater still worked OK at 70mph ![]() i did all the stripping of my car and got a good job done for $1500 including lots of door dings fixed. i wouldnt say its a great job but it is shiny and a nicer color than it was originally (went from '80s brown to 997 carmona red). as far as "rent a booth", if you or someone you know has access to a local military base they tend to have hobby shops with such facilities available. |

Cheap paint ? Ace Hdwr. A step above I got 1 pint PPG enamel split into 2 shop filled (omni pack) rattle cans plus a smidge left in a small can for $50 ( 30 paint, $8 per aerosol can, etc). ready for Trunk and underside touch ups. I ride a bike everyday without a stinking windshield, I would be happy to shuttle the Cab with a lawn chair driver seat and nought but 4 wheels and an emergency brake. $100 maybe ticket, $90 flat bed, a war story at the drive in priceless. I intended to do my prep up to or including a light orbital ... every Cab panel + front end already off, gobs of gorilla snot removed, single dent flush to 1/8. $1500 & acceptable would be a god send, I'll keep looking as I get closer. Any car ? Any Color? Main hurdle now to get the canvas stretched before pulling the top as a unit for repaint. lots of mech left. all dreams at this point. look for bubbles, there I'll under them ![]() |

Okay. I didn't realize you were doing most or all of the prep work yourself. That should cut down the price. And with you doing the initial sanding, and with a cab (presumably less paint), it shouldn't be 8k.
I assumed the 8k price was for the shop to pull all panels, glass, do masking, prepping, etc. themselves. Which seemed reasonable if the spray was very good quality. I've seen clear coat on the red paint peel like you mention. I've never seen or painted in a booth myself so I don't know how it lays on. But I've been told Guards Red is a single stage paint, meaning the clear coat is mixed in. A good body guy can take the year and code and tell you how many stages it is, and what that means exactly. I don't know. There are also different brand paints which can be different prices. Different colors (regardless of stages of spray) also vary in price. A good paint guy can explain all this much more thoroughly and accurately than I! I wouldn't recommend driving the car disassembled! You can't properly control a car without the proper seating and belt equipment. |

In the Fires of Hell.....

I did the front fenders of my '87 924S race car with PPG Guards Red paint.
Single stage urethane with catalyst. Stuff runs like hell if you aren't careful. Good thing it's a race car....

If a cop saw you in England driving a car like that they would write you enough citations for you to forfeit your licence for 12 months, and a big big fine.

Once taxied a wingless airplane down US 11 from paintshop location to airport hangar for reassembly. Hanging left arm out window for left turnsignal left a priceless look on guy's face flagging traffic at the airport entrance
