want t ofix power steering cooler line for last time

Want to fix my power steering cooler-to-reservoir hose for the last time, and not worry about it again.

Power steering cooler tube (the moonshiner maze) is 10 mm OD , mild steel.
Power steering reservoir inlet is 12 mm od. Mismatch. Naturally.

Originally there was a hose crimped to outlet end of cooler tube to run up to reservoir; original hose long gone but per PET looks like one of those specials; soft hose 10mm ID one end, flared to 12mm other side, The hose is not a separate item from the cooler, only available for $$$.

Thank you Porsche for making life complicated for us loyal but Poorsche owners!

I previously had a 10mm line crimped onto cooler line, intending to try to force the other end onto the 12mm reservior stub, but with only high pressure hose available, no way will it expand that much.

At this point I am looking for a 10mm ID / 12mm(ish) OD "butt weld union" that will let me braze to cooler tube, still terminating in a compression (crimped ferrule fitting) flared tip.

The idea not unlike this (damn ... links prohibited?? tried to give a link to a wrong-size but right look swagelok weld on union.)

Have not found anything yet . I am almost sure there is suitable plain steel tube out there; 10mm ID , 12mm OD, that would make a simple transition, but lacking any shoulder to secure the crimped hose.

Will be sadly scrounging the generic brake line bin at O'Rs, then probably to the hydraulic shop in town come Monday, so posing a few ideas & questions for the brilliant pelican flock here;

1) hate to solve old problems; is there a better fix already out there? has any one found a 10mm to 12mm hydraulic line ( suitable for low pressure hot oil) that I can simply have crimped onto cooler? searchable particulars please …. attaboy will come back your way.

barring that

2) any one have a part name, PN etc, for a suitable braze-on fitting I want (10mm ID , 12mm OD, some kind of swage or mild flare on the end that allows for a secure & oil tight crimp hose fitting on the 12mm end ?

Now now quit smirking; when I got my car, the fuel lines (underframe) were pretty well crushed by dPO who parked the car atop a rock; I removed those loooong gas lines under car, cut out the offending sections, shaped, then brazed on some mild steel tube to replace those sections. Worked great and no complaints since. (was a propane + ox braze ... nothing more. Happy to try MAPP this time)

Have you considered using some tranny cooler line with a spring clamp?

Qoute: I previously had a 10mm line crimped onto cooler line, intending to try to force the other end onto the 12mm reservior stub, but with only high pressure hose available, no way will it expand that much.

Yes it will, use two screwdrivers to stretch it, and then some grease to assist when pushing it on.

The spring clamps are self tightening and don't damage the hose like a barrel clamp will...

sure seems like I did forever ago in an earlier go at this problem but thanks - just the sort of suggestions I hoped for. Much appreciated.

I normally use stout round needle nose pliers ( round match tool tip to round hose ID) to expand lines like that, also have a pair of suitable snap ring pliers ( squeezing OPENS these duck-billed pliers) to stretch lines. Any gouges from sharp tools inside a line wont help sealing

understand.

What I really hope to hear is

a) someone found a very similarly ending tube (takes a crimp style fitting ) only in a 12mm od to match reservoir inlet (and thus hopefully ~10mm ID ) that I can braze to my cooler, junque yard item target,

b) someone found a cheap 10mm flexy hot oil hose that transistions to a 12mm end and is an appropriate length. I'd even settle for a non german nameplate

and then all my wears and tears are licked

just did this using 10mm ID. after some stretching the end for the reservoir, was able to push it on enough to have a clamp behind the flare. I also picked up some 12mm hose in case I could not work it on. so far OK, but just got the car running and will keep a close eye on it for a while. as this is a low pressure, suspect you could clamp the end of a 12mm ID to the hard line enough to not leak.

as great as the overall engineering is on Porsches, we all keep encountering these 'duh' moment. would really like to know why them made some things the way they did.

arnnworks

this company makes a replacement hose for the cooler to reservoir return. Not OEM but cheap, quick and easy

I was able to flare the 10mm hose with a heat gun and rage. I also had to use a hose "spring" anti-kinking thing to make one of the turns. I think 12mm hose might be too thick to make the bends so it'd be better to transition up from 10mm.

If I had to do it again I might make a 90 degree fitting with 10mm/12mm or 3/8 x 1/2" 90 degree fitting(s.) I thought about this before but decided I liked the rage-based solution over having two-three more connectors, but with the spring in there the kludge factor goes up. A 90 degree fitting would eliminate the tight bend. If you do not feel like messing around with it the Arnworks hose looks like a great solution for a reasonable price.

Edit: Is the OEM-style hose only $35 or so? If so get that.

It'd be a 3/8" elbow and a 1/2" barb fitting screwed together I suppose. There is a Sharkbite fitting at Home Depot with the right name but my recollection is that Sharkbite fittings are sized oddly, so you would want to check.

90 Degree Barb Reducing Elbows: 1/2" x 3/8" & 1/2" x 3/4"

thanks I'll look some of that stuff over.

I had a lot of PEX fittings ( pex uses crimp on rings to compress for potable plumbing), very similar to sharkbite, but the diameters were wrong on both I and O ( for use as a bushing anyway)

That would be nice to make a hard 90 instead of a bent hose 90

I'm going to chat with the transmission supply here ; see what they have in the tranny cooler kit bag

I make custom Fuel & Oil Hoses & Lines for Porsches.

Something like this may help......

This is for the fuel supply from tank to pump on a early 911 with 10mm & 12mm hoses & crimped fittings for Hi-Pressure. A similar one of the right size & correct hose for oil could be made up for a 944. Alternately, you could send me your cooler for re-hosing.

Email me for info. Please do not PM me. No PMs, NO PMs.

Len at Autosportengineering dot com

Edit: Since you like to braze, I can also send you a tube end of the correct size to braze to your cooler. Cannot add a photo now but will in my email reply.
