Poll for 944 owners who've spun a rod bearing.
THIS THREAD IS NOT AN OIL ARGUMENT. DON'T INSERT YOUR CRACKPOT THEORIES OR OFF TOPIC BS HERE.
This is just data collection. We can start a thread about the results later. I think it would be interesting to see the type of oil y'all were using when you spun a rod bearing. Of course it would be hard to normalize the data to account for the use of that oil in the 944 community but heck let's see what comes up. Please state the following: Oil Brand/line Viscosity Mileage on the motor Was the car tracked? |

i broke down a 951 motor a while back that was a street car, about 100k miles, running dinosaur oil (not sure of weight) but also nitrous...
the #2 rod journal was 0.5mm smaller than the rest, it was so trashed. if anyone's got a spun-rod crank laying around, PM me... |

I think a lot of people who spun a bearing probably aren't here anymore... it's one of those repairs that exceeds the value of the car in many cases so it's equivalent to totaling it out.

When was failure? What was the rev range you most often drove the car prior to bearing spin? I posted a poll on RL last week asking this to perhaps build a correlation between engine redline runs and its longevity...

I have hillclimbed and autox'd my car. Rod bearing went at 6200rpm at 142k miles during an autox. Oil was Mobil 1 5-50

Mine spun while driving leisurely on the street the day before an autocross. I was running Mobile 1 15w50 with 130k on the clock. I don't know how it was used before I got it, but I only drive it for 12 autocross runs and about 3000 street miles.
I do still have the crank but the rest of the engine is probably beer cans by now. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

Any interest in editing the poll to include rpm's at point of failure?

Mobil 1 15w50
Incident 1 at Road Atlanta in 2002 Approximately 100,000 miles on engine. Car was a dedicated race car. Incident 2 at Barber in 2004 Mileage unknown. Same car. I ran an Accusump until the second incident. When I replaced the engine after the second incident, I bought a 50,000 mile engine from a friend that had 4 DE weekends on it. No. 2 bearings were heavily scored. Afterwards, I removed the Accusump and added the Lindsey Racing oil pan baffle. Raced the car heavily until I sold it in 2010. Never another issue. Replaced the rod bearings at end of 2009 and they looked new. |

Anyone catch it in time as to not need machine work with oversize bearing?

I purchased the car with 213k and no real history. The rod bearing was the second bullet I dodged. The car also had a roller that fell apart while doing a timing belt/water pump service. I have to thank Jason at Maniac Racing for some great advice and terrific service!! |

The guy next to me in the paddocks spun a rod bearing over the weekend in his well prepped SP2 car, going to replace mine before my next PCA 90 minute enduro race ... wisely,i installed a Lindsey three piece crossmember when i prepped the car this Spring.I'm not too keen on the fact that my car is running 230-235 degree oil temps with Mobil 1 15w50 during the 30 minute sprints !
Cheers Phil
