1988 Automobile article: 930 -vs- 951S
Hi folks,
apologies if this was posted already. Danno on Rennlist scanned an interesting article from Automobile 06/88 comparing the 930 and the 951S. http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=011448 I think the article is fair in discussing +/- points of each car. Now something thats very important to note. One of the testers for this article was none other than the famous Derek Bell, multi LeMans winner for Porsche. An absolutely great driver (get his video where is laps various tracks in a 962 at full belt. Amazing). Karl.

great article. it's always interesting to compare the myth of a group, even a large group, against tested fact.
but they had the wrong bell driving for them in the article, some dufus guy named derek bell--who's that? ![]() ![]() |

Come on now - be nice. It wouldn't do for another slanging match to start.
(edit) Or slag me off - I don't mind - I can't drive worth a damn and my car handles like a 60s 911.

It's always interesting to read these kind of articles, but imho the conclusions drawn by the readers are generally blown WAY out of proportion.
If you are buying a car to track, then you should read this article closely, since what they are testing matters to you. If you are buying the car to drive on the street, you frankly shouldn't be worrying about how it handles at the limits. If you're driving that way on the street, you need to get on the track where that kind of stuff belongs. What I'm interested in is driving my car everyday, what it will cost to keep it running, and most importantly, how it makes me feel when I fire it up in the morning, and take a nice twisty road. Frankly, an article like that can't tell me that...only seat time can. So for me, it is entertaining to read these articles, but it really doesn't play into my decision on what car to own, because I don't care how fast Derek Bell can slog around the track. I care about how big my grin is when *I'm* driving the car down PCH. YMMV. |
