Just bought a 89 Turbo S, need some help.....

Hi guys I just purchased a 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo S in hopes of making it a track car. Here is a little background on my cars and decesion. I have a 2001 325XI BMW that i have spent about 16k on. The car wasnt doing what i needed it to do on the track so I had it for sale, and was planning on buying a BMW M coupe. I saw this 944 at a PCA event and fell in love. It has 63k miles. It is white and came with many mods. It came with Authority Chip, Boost Controller, Ported and Polished heads, Fabspeed exhaust with a cat by-pass system, harness bar and harnesses. I was wondering what the hp and or acceleration times this car is running now. Also I was wondering after a K27 Turbo Upgrade and Mass Airflow kit how my car will be running (hp and acceleration figures). I will also be doing a full bilstein coil over kit with sways etc. I was wondering what you guys thought of this set up and if you had any more ideas for the car. thanks again.

Obviously it is nothing but problems. My best idea? Sell it to me. I will take it of your hands for cheap.

For a track car, handling and driver skill are more important than power. I have a friend with a 2000 pound VW Golf and about 120 hp. If I did not run up a huge lead on the straights I could not stay ahead of him.

I don't know what my engine puts out but here is what I have done to it. It has good straight line speed.

K27DR turbo
MAF
Chips
Fuel Pressure
Extrude honed intake
Ported and polished head
Reamed throttle body
Larger boost tubes
Head gasket
1.1 bar boost

For a comparison I have a SLK32 AMG, the little supercharged Mercedes. It is plenty fast and has 349 hp and weighs 3250 pounds with a 5 speed no slip auto and water cooled intercooler. The 944t weighs 2987. The 70-100 time for the Porsche is 0.6 second faster.

Do you have any track experience yet? If not, you have MORE than plenty power to play with. Start attending PCA DE's (Driver's Ed events), and autocrosses. That will help you learn car control.

Like Lawrence said, it's not about a fast car, it's about a good driver!

Have fun with the 951S: it's a pretty rare car. And fast.

Welcome to the group!

As has been said a stock turbo S makes a great track car so if it were me I would track the car as is before getting into changes.

Do you have any pictures you can post?

Oh, and I will give you my traditional response when someone picks up a great little car. (I drive a 1984 beater)

I hate you, I hate you, I hate you...

I do have a bit of track experience, done a few Racing Schools, and several driving events, including track days and autocrosses. I raced the BMW for a while and now moved on to the bigger and badder car. I will be doing several schools and events this year and hopefully next year the car will be a complete track car and I will be doing PCA club racing.

MAF upgrades are 90's tricks...if you want to reduce intake restriction then check out:

www.gururacing.net

You'll find interest in their MAP kit which makes tuning more precise and reduces intake restrictions to a minimum...probably less expensive and troublesome than a MAF kit as well. Like others have said your car is BEYOND capable of track duty in its current state...coilovers would be nice but you don't NEED them because the 89 Turbos came with sport suspension from the factory. You're probably putting out ~290+ horse to the tires right now...sub 5-second 0-60 and 13 flat 1/4 miles are my guess, but you'll be more impressed with pounding the car on the track! Oh yeah...and with a 63k mile example you're a very fortunate guy. Take care of that thing and please don't strip it out. :(

I told a buddy of mine i could probably run a 12.9. I have competetion tires mounted on the car, you think i could run sub 13's or is this unreasonable. Even though i am not a huge drag racing fan, i want to see how it does. a buddy of mine ran a 12.7 in his slightly tuned Z06, so something close would be nice.

Never know until you try...I suck at bench racing. :D

Congrats on a great car! I had one that I sold several years back and regret every moment since! Take care of her...I actually don't like the thought of making it JUST a track car...But your the owner...Good luck!
