Question about 944

Im looking into buying this 944, its a early 85 with 101,800 miles,It has bent valves from a broke timing belt and stripped cam belt and the head will probally need to be replaced, All panels are good on the car and all electrical components work with a battery charger hooked up{Radio,Sunroof,Lights, etc} Interior is good also. It needs hood shocks and the doors stick also, It comes with a new timing and cam belt, Distributor cap and rotor but the head will need to be purchased , The guy is asking $500 for the car, Is that a good price?

$500 is a good price, but only considering that this is now a parts car or a serious restoration project. Engine damage in a 944 is some serious trouble... if I were you I would save up, keep shopping around, and find a running example for 4 grand or so.

uhmmmm $500 is the going rate for a non-running 944....

You could probably find a long block for under $1000... If you get away with just needing the head...$150 for a used one ........... but then someone has to put the stuff on ..........if you can do it great!

SO if thats all it took to get it running .... that might not be a bad deal after all.

I would check into the sticking doors. I have seen alot of 944's and have never seen one with sticky doors. This would make me think BAD accident.

otherwise, if you can do the work yourself(which is not hard) than it woul dbe a good deal. If you have to pay a shop it is going to cost you @ $1500. Then think about the fact that you have not been able to check the clutch($1500), oil pressure for rod bearing and engine wear($3000+). It could get very pricey if there are other areas that need work.

If someone let the belts strip then they were obviously not very on top of the maintenence that is required for these cars......kinda scary.

Now that i have probably scared you to death........i will end it by saying that i would probably buy it after some inspecting of the criticals.

I miss my old 1987 Ford Crown Victoria.......... not.

That thing was the size of a K-Mart and could seat 300 comfortably, but what a freaking eyesore pain in the ass.

ditto. My Bronco caught fire one year into ownership, on a date with the hottest girl on campus!

I will never own another. Thank god it burned to the ground and could not be repaired.

Very cool name!

Talking

Well my 1994 T-Bird V8 ran GREAT! It was fast and comfortable and good looking...

Then it hit 100,000 miles:
Tranny F***ed up, $1500 rebuild, still F***ed up+
Loss of oil presure, $2500 rebuild, still F***ed up+
Paint started to flake off.
Oh yeah, front rotors only lasted 20,000 miles

I like to think of it as a learning experience.

Are you guys sure it wont I wont just need a head, I found a complete head for $200, I will be doing the work myself. Its the door locks themselves that stick, not the door.I was just going to buy it because I want another 944, I had a 86 944 about 7 years ago and I miss it,

Porsche Crest

My car had sat around for awhile when I bought it, everything was sticky (no jokes PLEASE!) after driving it regularly for a few months the doors, and everything loosened up and things started working pretty well.

If that is a good head (PLEASE no jokes!) $200 would be a good deal IMHO

Dunno - how bad is the bottom end (NO JOKES!) pistons, rods, bearings? could be very expensive.
On the other hand my PO broke the timing belt and only had to have the top end rebuilt.

Best case scenario = $500 car $200 engine fix, you would win the best bargain of the year, possibly decade!

Although you already know you are rolling the dice,
worst case = long painful cashectomy

Like i said......i would buy it(if i had somewhere to park it).

Even if there are more problems with it you could easily get your money back parting it out.

It would be fun to work on anyway.
