Camshaft Question
After installing the cam box on the cylinder head, should the cam gear be able to be moved by hand? The reason I ask is because I followed the Clark's Garage install instructions when installing the cam box on my 86 and I aligned the marks on the cam and the backing plate as instructed and bolted the cam box in place. The timing marks are lined up but the cam gear will not move by hand. Should it be able to move by hand a few degrees? Engine is at top dead center with a flywheel lock in place. No belts are on the engine.

Not sure it can move a degree here or there, I just leave it alone. Some of the cam lobes are pushing down on the valve springs. And, if it does move, it will move somewhat violently! So, don't turn it!

I don't think "by hand" is a literal term. Turning the engine over 'by hand' means to use a tool and do it manually without the help of the starter. It would depend on how strong you are that you can move the cam without a wrench. However, if you are using a wrench then I've misunderstood and the cam is binding, which is a problem.

You won't be able to move it by hand, unless your fingers are freakishly strong. Use a wrench, there's a spot on the cam (at least on the 16V ones) that has a castings for a wrench.

I would not attempt to move it unless all belts are installed making sure all marks are good
