Exhaust in the cabin smell

I'm pretty sure this subject has been discussed ad nauseum but it's one thing I haven't been able to figure out. Exhaust smell occurs when gas pedal and windows are down. No smell when windows are up. I have replaced the rear hatch seal, fixed leaks in the exhaust system, can't figure out what else to do. I guess the problem is that exhaust gets trapped below the spoiler and gets sucked into the cabin from under the car?? I'm thinking the fix is to extend the tailpipe or re -route it to the side...has anyone tried this ? My tailpipe doesn't even extend past the rear bumper now and I'm wondering if the original did. Surely this wasn't a problem when the car was new, what's the deal?

Check for other leak sources such as around the tail lights, or the sunrrof and fuel door drain hoses in the wheel wells. Seal with silicon.

Also the hatch may still not seat fully even with a new seal. Easy answer is to get some foam stick on weather stripping from home depot and apply at rear. Esthetics are less important than a good seal. As you can see by the impression in the foam, the hatch could still leak as it may not align with the new seal due to deformation or misalignment of the hatch frame...

Mine is bad too, and I've done everything. No idea, just wanted to say you're not alone.

If you figure it out, please let us know.

You say: no smell if windows up. That means you have proper sealing in the trunk area, not really anything to be done there yet. These cars have quite some turbulence behind while moving and the smells just tend to sneak forwards and enter through the open windows or roof. This is my experience with every 9x4 I drove or rode. Thus I think there isn't anything else you can do since with closed windows everything is fine.

With the extra weather stripping I don't have any more exhaust smell in the cabin. Crawl in the hatch area and look closely at how tight your seal is. You may be surprised. It is a $5 fix.

Also check the big rubber cap over the fuel-level sender. I've seen a few cars where the cap doesn't fit tightly over the hole.

Seal it with silicon sealant.
