Loose Gear Shifter

Last year I noticed my shifter getting excessively loose in its play. I replaced the gearshift lever with a new part which helped somewhat, but several days later the shifter failed completely and I could not put the car into gear. After having it towed back home (because no break-down ever seems to happen in the driveway), it was clear that the bolt holding the intermediate shift lever had come loose and vibrated off of the transmission itself. I reset the bolt and it seemed all was well and the car shifted better than it ever has.

However, over the last few weeks I have noticed the shifter slowly becoming loose again, presumably due to the same issue. What could be causing the problem and what is the best fix? Should I just apply some Loctite to the bolt and hope it never happens again or do I have a bigger problem at hand?

You need to safety wire it.

+1 on the wire, I also put a hose clamp behind this rod. In the case of the wire coming out or the bolt breaking this will allow the rear shift plane to still work (2,4,R). It does not in any way impede shifting either.

Regards
Dave

Perfect time to upgrade to a new short shifter and shifter linkage from only944.com. Easily one of the best additions to your car.

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I also would recommend loctite on that bolt.

Thank you very much everyone for your help. I got one of the Only944 short shifters and a shift linkage and I couldn't be happier. Hopefully I won't have to get back underneath the transmission for a while.

I did the short shift last year. At the time I had a bolt in place that had no safety wire hole I just loctited it. This weekend I replaced it with a safety wire bolt and it was a work getting the old one out with only blue loctite. I can't imagine it would ever have come out on its own. In fact if I had known that I wouldn't have removed it as getting the rubber booty back in pace is the biggest PITA of the job.
I just roll the rear of the car onto ramps for access. No way I could do the job with just the LR wheel off or on the ground. I coldn't reach. That said, just removing the muffler heat shield gives plenty of access. I'm guessing those that claim to swap these linkages out in 15 minutues might not still have the heat shield in place.
