1980 Porsche 924 automatic
Having negotiations on buying a 944 with an owner not going anywhere, can someone give some advice on a '80 924 automatic? What are the problem areas of the engine and auto tranny? I understand its mostly VW/Audi. Are the electricals reliable. Thx

The rubber damper, if it fails, is the only real unique issue (to all 924/944 autos). Pretty hard to find a replacement; word is it can be replaced with a manual clutch and pressure plate - though I haven't done that myself, despite having had 2 autos.
Seems that the trans is pretty solid, but the lack of the extra gear kinda sucks - too many revs for my liking at highway speeds. Plus the obvious reduced fun factor vs. a 5-speed.

Engine is from Audi. Non-inteference head, very easy to work on and durable. Auto transmission is a negative, there isn't a lot of horsepower to work with and you really need the 5 speed manual to enjoy driving it.
924 bodies are almost completely unchanged, right up thru 1988 so parts are also available. Don't spend a lot, these cars don't have much value. Jon
