Installing transmission, coupler won't slide onto drive shaft

When I removed the transmission on my 1987 924S, the coupler slid easily off the drive shaft. Now I am reinstalling the transmission. I have the transmission bolted to the drive shaft bell housing. I have not yet bolted the transaxle to the frame because clarks's garage says to do that after installing the coupler. But I can't get the coupler to slide from the transaxle shaft onto the drive shaft. I found this thread about the same problem: 795663-transaxle.html

However, I am still not able to get the coupler on. Does it matter if the coupler is not lined up the way it was when it came off? Aren't all the splines the same width? Does it help to raise and lower the transaxle slightly? Is it possible to tap the coupler on? Any other advice? I really don't want to drop the transaxle again. I appreciate any advice.

Did you hammer on the tt shaft at all? I know someone that did and it mushroomed the end a little bit. I filed between the splines and it went right on.

Try shifting the trans a little.
Try loosening the trans bolts to manipulate the trans more and try to slide it on. Keep a jack under it when you do this.
Don't hammer the coupler on unless it is seating on the splines properly, it's ok to tap it to help it go on, but nothing more. Force will damage the splines. Keep rotating the trans input shaft while trying to slide the coupler forward to find where it will seat. If you feel it hit and start to seat, keep forward pressure and manipulate the trans with your other hand.

Thanks. I carefully aligned the splines until I could feel them begin to seat as you said. Then I put a long pry bar through the hole on the driver's side of the transmission. I applied more force to the pry bar than before, and the coupler suddenly jumped forward.

I coat the splines in anti-seize before putting them back together. It helps for any removal at a later date and works like a lube too. Try placing a jack under the torque tube bell housing to lift it up some. This will help align it up better.

Anti-seize is definitely recommended

a tranny-jack really helps. Make adjustments to height and angle of the trans until it lines up with torque tube. The coupler will simply slide on by hand when you've got the alignment correct.
